ADULT SERVICES 

  • Adult Craft: Pressed Flower Lanterns. Make a pressed flower lantern for your summer tablescape!  Using mod podge and dried flowers, participants will make one glass jar lantern each.  All materials provided.  Limit 16 people.  Ages 13+.  Register.  Tuesday, July 18 at 3:30 p.m.
  • Virtual Author Talk: Chatter with Ethan Kross. An award-winning professor and bestselling, Ethan Kross is one of the world’s leading experts in controlling the conscious mind.  His latest book, Chatter, uses a blend of cutting-edge science (from his own lab) and real-world case studies to help us harness the power of our inner voice.  Register.  Thursday, July 20 at 1 p.m.
  • The Life and Works of Agatha Christie. The Guinness Book of World Records lists Agatha Christie as the best-selling novelist of all time.  Who was this remarkable woman?  How did she come to write her indelible works?  Retired professor Dr. Bill Thierfelder explores these and other questions, along with the real-life mystery of Christie’s dramatic 11-day disappearance in 1926 that remains substantially unsolved.  Hosted by the Tewksbury Library in partnership with Wayland and other libraries.  Online only.    Register.  Friday, July 21 at 2 p.m.
  • Japanese Design in America with Historic New England. After Commodore Perry forcibly opened Japan’s ports in 1854, the ensuing “Japan craze” brought Japanese motifs and materials into the design of everyday household goods.  By 1900, the American home was saturated with elements of Japanese art and culture, both real and imagined.   Led by Erica Lome, Associate Curator, Historic New England.   Hosted by the Tewksbury Library in partnership with Wayland and other libraries.  Online only.  Register.  Tuesday, July 25 at noon.
  • Virtual Author Talk: Erika Sanchez, Crying in the Bathroom. Novelist and poet Sánchez writes about everything from sex to white feminism to debilitating depression, revealing an interior life rich with ideas, self-awareness, and perception.  Hilarious, insightful, unapologetic, and brutally honest, her new memoir will make you feel that post-confessional high that comes from talking for hours with your best friend.  Register.  Tuesday, July 25 at 4 p.m..
  • Calling All Artists. Starting in November, our Raytheon Room exhibit space is available for shows.  And our smaller, upstairs foyer is free starting in October.  If you have work that you want the world—or at least Wayland–to see, start by reviewing our Exhibits and Display policy.  You’ll find links to application forms on the same page.  After that, you might be getting ready to have a show!

YOUTH SERVICES

SUMMER READING.  Our 2023 Summer Reading Program Find Your Voice is ongoing. Programming highlights include live animals with Joy from Joys of Nature, a performance by the Toe Jam Puppet Band, many fun craft and STEM challenges, and an ice cream social.  Kids can track their reading online or on paper logs to earn raffle tickets for prizes. Every child who registers can pick up a goody bag at the library!

The Teen Summer Reading Program is also ongoing. Programming highlights for teens include  a beading workshop and a Switch Tournament. FOR BABIES, TODDLERS AND PRESCHOOLERS 

  • Outdoor Baby & Toddler Storytime with Ms. Carly. This storytime encourages early literacy and caregiver-child interactions with lively songs and rhymes, bounces, books, and body-awareness. Best for babies and toddlers, with caregiver. Weather permitting, we will meet outdoors on the green lawn. Tuesdays, July 18, July 25, August 1, August 15, August 22, and August 29 at 10:30 a.m.
  • Outdoor Storytime with Ms. Pam. Join Ms. Pam for stories, songs, puppets, and activities. For ages 2.5 to 5 years with an adult. Please register. We will meet in the Children’s Room. Thursdays, July 27 , August 3, and August 10, at 10:30 a.m.
  • Storytime with Obie the Dog. Children will listen to dog stories and have a chance to visit with Obie, a beautiful Samoyed. Obie will be accompanied by his owner Helen. We will meet in the Raytheon Room. For ages 3 and up, with an adult. Please register HERE. Monday, July 20, at 10:30 am.
  • Sing, Move, and Story! Jodi Levin from Family ACCESS Community Connections will lead children in songs and movement, and will share a story! We will meet outside on the lawn. For ages 0-3. Please register HERE. Friday, July 21, at 9:30 a.m.

FOR ELEMENTARY AGE CHILDREN

  • Speak Up For Nature: Live Animal Show at Hannah Williams Playground. Joy from Joys of Nature will bring live animals to Hannah Williams Playground and will teach kids about endangered species in the wild and here in New England, and around the world. She will also talk about what we can all do to help these animals. For children ages 5 and up, with caregivers. Please register. There will be two shows on Tuesday, July 18: one from 10:00-10:30 am and one from 11:00-11:30 am. This event takes place at the Hannah Williams Playground, 71 Main Street.
  • Stronger Together: Speak Up for Our Planet. Dr. Sabine von Mering will read We Are Water Protectors by Carole Lindstrom, talk about her work for climate justice, and encourage children to work together to fight climate change. Kids will make their own noisemakers out of recyclable materials. For children in grades 2 and up. Please register HERE. Wednesday, July 19, at 3:30 pm.
  • Make a Nature Journal. Children will make their own nature journals to take home. We will talk about what we see in nature, what we can draw and paint, as well as what we can collect and save, in our journals. We will use natural objects as stamps to decorate our journals. Weather permitting, we will meet outside on the lawn. For ages 5 and up, with caregiver. Please register HERE. Thursday, July 20, at 3:30 p.m.
  • Kids Karaoke Party. Join us for a singing and dancing party! Kids can choose from a variety of karaoke songs, from pop to familiar Disney tunes. Bring a friend or two to join in on the fun! For ages 5 and up, with caregiver. Please register HERE. Tuesday, July 25, at 3:30 p.m.
  • Musical Storytime with Ms. Janet. We will read stories about musical instruments, sing, dance, and make our own musical shakers. Ms. Janet will bring her ukulele! For ages 3 and up, with caregiver. Please register HERE. Wednesday, July 26, at 10:30 a.m.
  • Find Your Voice Through Music and Song. Local musician Julie Stepanek will lead children in chants, call & responses, and singable songs. She will bring her ukulele! For ages 4 and up, with caregiver. Please register HERE. Thursday, July 27, at 2:00 p.m.

FOR TEENS

  • Teens Helping Teens: Bookmarks for Incarcerated Teens. We will make bookmarks for incarcerated teens and talk about other ways to help marginalized peers in our community and beyond. After the program the bookmarks will be mailed to Liberation Library. For teens in grades 6 and up. Please register HERE. Thursday, July 20, at 3:30 p.m.
  • Beading Workshop for Teens. We will make beads from colorful paper and make our own bracelets. For teens in grades 6 and up. Please register HERE. Wednesday, August 2, at 3:30 p.m.
