The weekly newsletter for Wayland residents

November 22, 2022

It seems like there is a lot going on in Town Government:

  • The Town is going through the hiring process for a new Town Administrator, with the search committee‘s work underway
  • The School Committee held a highly controversial session a few weeks ago debating whether to put the Superintendent on leave while they conduct an investigation. They now face an OML complaint regarding that session (Disclosure: submitted by WEN Executive Director Kim Reichelt) that questions the Committee’s process. The School Committee’s next meeting will be held after Thanksgiving break.

Shop to support Save the Strays International

Yes, its the holidays, and yes, another donation request, but this time, hopefully you find something cool, and we get much needed funds to meet the ever growing requests to save and care for these sweet dogs. Wayland veterinarian Amy Shroff has recently formed Let’s Save The Strays International. It’s a 501c3 organization dedicated to giving care to strays in underserved nations where others will not go. These sweet souls need a voice- thats our mission. What makes this organization different from some of the larger ones asking you for money?

  • We are a volunteer only organization where every cent they raise goes directly to the animals.
  • We are a grass roots group dedicated to helping countries with no resource solve their own issues. We work with local communities and veterinarians to learn a better way to care for these strays.
  • We are growing and reaching more and more communities with over 4000 dogs neutered, vaccinated, dewormed and cared for by the community they live in!

So come on! What are you waiting for? Help us raise money for Shop to Save the Strays International. Every purchase you make gives back right to our cause. Together, we can make good things happen. Click here to check out the cool stuff.

New Tutors Trained in Wayland Library’s ESOL Program

Immigrants in our area who want to improve their competence in English now have greater opportunities. Six generous and enthusiastic people have recently completed a training course and are now certified to be tutors of ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages). These recent “graduates” include three from Wayland – Chris German, Ana Signorovitch and Lisa Vrigian; one from Sudbury – Barbara Kaplan; one from Framingham – Mary Mlodzinska; and one from Boston – Marian Ellwood. These new tutors, like those who were trained last winter, and some who have been tutoring for years, work one-to-one with learners from various countries. Learners recently matched with our tutors have come from China, Ukraine, Brazil, Guatemala, South Korea, Moldova and Venezuela. Much tutoring is now done remotely, with tutors are using whatever technology works for both tutor and learner, be it FaceTime, Skype, Zoom or simply phone and email. Other tutors are meeting with their learners in person.

As usual, we can put all possible tutors to work with waiting learners. The next tutor-training course will be offered in early spring, probably starting March. Tutors do not need to know another language, nor do they need to know every detail of English grammar. For more information contact Ginny Steel at 781-541-4919 or at virginia@thesteels.com

Wayland Energy and Climate Committee Seeking Applicants for Student Member. Student members will be expected to engage community members in climate awareness initiatives, participate in ECC projects, attend monthly virtual ECC meetings which are usually about one and a half hours, and bring a different perspective to plans and programs. Applicants should be passionate about addressing climate change and have available extracurricular time to devote to the ECC and Wayland’s response to the climate crisis. They should anticipate being involved in about two hours of meetings monthly, as well as prep and projects for a few additional hours. Interested students are welcome to attend an ECC meeting to learn more about the members of the committee and what they do. Meetings are open to the public and can be found on the Town Calendar. To apply, students should send an email explaining their interests and qualifications, along with their resume to the Select Board c/o Chris Costello. Donations sought for Lerner Travelship. Student Travel is back at WHS! If you have a student traveler, or were one yourself, you know student travel can change lives! Curriculum comes to life, students use the language they have been learning in real-life settings, and friendships are forged with teens from other countries. The WHS Language Department is thrilled to offer European travel once again! If you would like to encourage students to take part, consider a donation to the Lerner Travelship, a scholarship fund for WHS student travel to France, Spain, and Italy. Your donation will help alleviate some of the costs for our high school students needing assistance, and to provide an enriching experience to students in your community. Please make your check out to Wayland High School, and bring it to Lorraine Keegan in the main office. Serving Families for Thanksgiving With Your Help. Each year the Celebration International Church’s Food Pantry provides aid to hundreds of families for Thanksgiving. We call this annual initiative Operation Turkey Express and it’s one of our favorite annual events. Many families have come to depend on us for their turkey and Thanksgiving fixings. We are looking forward to sharing hope with them once again on November 19th. Details can be found on our calendar www.cicalive.org/events.

We would like to extend an invitation to any who may be needing some assistance. If you know of someone who is facing food uncertainty, we’d love to help. Share this information with them and encourage them to sign up, it’s 100% free and simple. They can reach out to our church office at 508-653-6864 and we’ll gladly assist them in getting registered.

Secondly, I’d also like to share our own need in case anyone in the community could assist us financially with a donation. Our turkey supplier was unable to fulfill our order for 400 turkeys due to the supply chain shortage. They recommended giving families a gift card in lieu of the turkey. That is not ideal since so many depend on us for a turkey, and supplies are limited at those supermarkets. After contacting numerous vendors, our only option has been to purchase these turkeys at triple the cost. We operate on a tiny budget and this setback would eat up our entire annual budget. Thankfully we’re all set with the other food items, we just need help to buy the turkeys. Any financial help, whether small or large, would go a long way! Donations can be made payable to: CIC and marked for Food Pantry. We’re located at 6 Loker Street, Wayland, MA 01778.

Please call us if you need help with your bills, 508-358-3624 or go to the town website for an application.
Join the MRC! New Medical Reserve Corps Volunteers are always needed! We have a great group of volunteers, however, we would love to recruit new members. If you are interested in helping out your community and would like to volunteer please contact the Health Department at Health@wayland.ma.us.

Holiday Open House in the Center of Wayland – All are Welcome. As many of you know Wayland Center, pre-COVID, was alive with festive activities at the Wayland Historical Society’s Grout-Heard House Museum, the Wayland Free Public Library, the Depot, the First Parish Wayland, and in more recent years, Arts Wayland. We’re back! So, mark your calendars to visit each one of our historic buildings on December 4, 2022 from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM for an indoors and in-person Open House!

The Grout-Heard House Museum (GHHM), will be decorated by the Wayland Garden Club; the Girl Scout Tree will again be in the Stone Room; visitors will be invited to tour the house; music will be provided and children may engage in a game while touring the house. Our only change is that guests will receive goodie bags containing refreshments to take home rather than refreshments served at the house. Musical entertainment will include two high-school groups. At 2:30 PM a string quartet will perform. At 4PM, the Madrigals, an acapella group, will sing.

At the Wayland Free Public Library there will be entertainment for children and music for all ages. In the middle of the afternoon (3 PM) local musicians Thomas Meunier and Cindy Lou have been booked for a holiday concert with a jazz twist.

Toward the end of the festive afternoon there will be a traditional Carol Sing at the First Parish-Wayland with the New Horizon Band at 4:30 PM.

Throughout the afternoon you may want to linger at the Depot (open from Noon to 5:00 PM) to shop for unique presents for those on your gift-giving list.

Please join us on December 4 th from 2:00 to 5:00 for this festive occasion and bring family and friends. All are welcome at the GHHM, the Wayland Library, the Depot and the First Parish Wayland.
