ADULT SERVICES

  • Author Talk: Murder and Indigenous Justice in Early America. Join author Nicole Eustace for an online talk on her Pulitzer Prize-winning Covered With Night: A Story of Murder and Indigenous Justice in Early America, which reconstructs the virtually forgotten history of a brutal assault of a Seneca hunter by pair of fur traders in 1722.  Eustace reveals a remarkable series of criminal investigations and cross-cultural negotiations that ignited a contest between Native American forms of justice—rooted in community, forgiveness, and reparations—and the colonial ideology of harsh reprisal.  Presented in partnership with the Organization of American Historians and the Billerica Public Library, as well as other Massachusetts libraries.  Register.  Wednesday, November 9 at 7 p.m.
  • Author Talk: Bonnie Garmus. Bonnie Garmus goes online to talk about her New York Times-bestselling novel, Lessons in Chemistry, the story of a female scientist in the 1960s who becomes (among other things) a cooking-show star.  Register.  Thursday, November 10 at 2 p.m.
  • Author Talk: Kwame Christian. Many people avoid conversations about race because of fear: fear of discomfort, damaging important relationships, being misunderstood, “cancelled,” or ostracized.  Kwame Christian’s book How to Have Difficult Conversations About Race equips you with the skills to make these crucial conversations easier and more productive.  A lawyer, professor, and the Managing Director of the American Negotiation Institute, Christian has conducted countless specialized trainings worldwide and is a highly sought-after keynote speaker.  Online only.  Register.  Tuesday, November 15 at 1 p.m.
  • Curator Talk. Curator Rhonda Anderson and photographer Sara Lyons will give a gallery talk on the exhibit Vital Vibrant Visible—Local Indigenous Identity Through Portraiture, and on representation of indigenous people.  The exhibit is on view until November 28.  Register.  Tuesday, November 15 at 7 p.m.
  • Pie!  A History. In this fun online presentation, Sarah Lohman will look at the origins of a beloved dessert, including meat pies and “coffins.” Then she’ll delve deep into the history of pumpkin pie and apple pie, stopping for digressions into the pumpkin spice flavor craze and the history of competitive pie eating.  Lohman is the author of the #1 Amazon best-seller Eight Flavors: The Untold Story of American Cuisine.  Formerly the Curator of Food Programming at the Lower East Side Tenement Museum, she has lectured at hundreds of universities and institutions nationwide.  Register.  Thursday, November 17 at 7 p.m.
