ALERT: Oppressive Heat Advisory for the Region Starting August 11 (Wednesday) through August 13 (Friday)

Town of Wayland 8/11/21: Oppressive Heat Advisory.  The National Weather Service (NWS) is forecasting a potential period of prolonged oppressive heat on Wednesday (8/11) to Friday (8/13) throughout most of the Commonwealth. During this three-day period, temperature highs will be 90 to 95 degrees with Heat index (Apparent Temperature) values between 98 and 104°F. The heat wave is expected to break sometime next weekend.

Impacts/ Potential Impacts
• Very hot temperatures with moderate humidity
• Potential of heat related issues to at risk population and those doing higher levels of outdoor physical activities

MEMA Operations
The State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC) is operating at Level 1 (Steady State Monitoring). MEMA will continue to monitor the situation and will disseminate additional Situational Awareness Statements, as necessary.

Preparedness and Safety Information

o Never leave children or pets alone in a closed vehicle. Even with the windows cracked open, interior temperatures can rise almost 20°F within 10 minutes.
o Check with your local officials to find locations of cooling centers near you. In Wayland Cooling Stations are located at the Public Safety Building (38 Cochituate Road) 24/7 and at the Wayland Free Public Library (5 Concord Road) during business hours 
o Know the symptoms of and watch out for heat-related illnesses like heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. Call 9-1-1 to report emergencies.
o Be a good neighbor. Check on family, friends, and neighbors, especially the elderly, those who live alone, those with medical conditions, those who may need additional assistance, and those who may not have air conditioning.
