Introduction to the iPhone/iPad, Tuesday, January 10, 2 p.m. Do you have some experience with your iPhone/iPad but feel like you might be missing out on some of the basics? Come on in. M.J. will discuss organizing icons, SIRI and the microphone, battery life, and other basics of these versatile and complex devices. Be sure to bring your iPhone or iPad with you.

Adult Coloring, Wednesday, December 21, 2 p.m. It’s the latest trend in relaxation!  Enjoy a peaceful hour coloring in the company of others. Pages, pencils and markers provided.  We’ll meet on the newly created meeting space on the mezzanine.

Aqueducts Run Through It, Sunday, January 8, 2:30-4:45 p.m. A Wayland Historical Society sponsored program presented by Tom Sciacca.  Conversation and refreshments will follow the presentation.

Celebrating Golden Retrievers and the Forthcoming 150th Anniversary of the Founding of the Breed, Tuesday, January 10, 7:30 p.m. One of the nation’s most popular dogs, the golden retriever originated in a small village in the Scottish highlands on the Guisachan Estate of Lord Tweedmouth, a member of the British Parliament. Joy Viola will discuss this early history, the forthcoming anniversary celebrations, the development of golden retriever rescue organizations, and the canine cancer research funded by the Golden Retriever Foundation.

Overdrive and Hoopla and Lynda, Oh My!  Friday, January 13, 10:30 a.m. Downloading ebooks from the library using OverDrive has gotten easier than ever. Wayland residents can also now stream DVDs with Hoopla (no waitlist!) and take free classes through Lynda using the library’s online resources.  Find out how to download a book and access these other resources from the library!

January Book Discussions for Adults. The library runs several adult book groups, and new members are always welcome. For more information about any of the groups, call the library at 508-358-2311.

English Conversation Group. Do you know someone who is learning basic English? The library’s English conversation group meets two Fridays each month from 10:30-11:30 a.m. The next sessions will be on December 16 and January 6.

Needlework/Handwork Group. Our needlework group will meet the following dates: January 4, February 1, March 1, April 5, and May 3. All are welcome

Exbhits. Artwork by Tom Risi is on display in the foyer through December. Tom didn’t discover his artistic inclination until he retired from the construction supply business and moved to Traditions of Wayland. He considers his work experiments in combining different and unusual media. The Raytheon Room features photographs by the Sudbury Valley Nature Photography group.

End-of-Year Giving. Many thanks to all who continue to support the Wayland Public Library Millennium Endowment Fund. To make an end-of-year gift to the fund, you can write a check, or simply go to “About Us” at waylandlibrary.org and click on “Millennium Fund.” You’ll find a Donate button, as well as information about the fund.

    • StoryVine (2.5 -5 years) Thursdays December 15, 29, Jan.12 and 26 at 10:30 a.m.
  • Sing-along with Jeannie Mack, Thursday, January 5, 10:30-11:15 a.m. for ages 2.5 to 4 years old
  • Zumba Kids Jr., Tuesday, December 27, 10:30-11 a.m. for ages 2.5 to 4 years old
  • Storytime with Dog, Thursday, January 19 at 10:30 a.m. Children will listen to dog stories and have a chance to visit with Corbyn, a beautiful Samoyed. Corbyn (with her owner Helen) has been certified as a therapy dog by Pets and People Foundation.

SCHOOL-AGE PROGRAMS

  • Maker Lab: Color Exploration! Wednesday, December 21, 3-4 p.m. Put on a lab coat and enter the Maker Lab! Join Giselle from The Learning Hub for this fourth session of our series of STEM Maker Classes. In this session children will learn about color and decorate mugs with beautiful color washes. Ages 5 and up.
  • Reel Time: Finding Dory, Wednesday, December 28, 3 p.m. Matinee at the library (popcorn included)! A family favorite for ages 5 and up. Rated PG, 103 minutes.
  • Parent/Child Book Club, Wednesday, January 11, at 7 p.m. This book discussion group is for 3rd and 4th graders with a parent. January’s book is Masterpiece, by Elise Broach.

For Teens: Learn to Keep Your Cool, Wednesday, January 18, 7-8 p.m. Rachel Rice, founder of Five Rhythms Consulting, will lead a stress reduction workshop for middle school and high school students, just in time for midyear exams.

Holiday Hours: The Library will be closed on December 24, 25, and 26 for Christmas. We will close on December 31 at 3 p.m., and will be closed all day January 1 and 2 for New Year’s.
