peanuts_web_psa_375x474SEPTEMBER IS LIBRARY CARD SIGN-UP MONTH! In celebration of Library Card Sign-up Month, we are having Picture Day at the Library on Saturday, September 24, from 2-4 p.m. Join the Friends or renew your membership and get your children’s picture taken with a favorite book. You will get a framed copy of the photo courtesy of the Friends of the Library. To be assured of a spot, sign up online through the library’s online event calendar.

Grow Your Organization Without Destroying Greatness. In an entertaining mixture of lecture, exercise, and great television commercial, Dr. Laurence J. Stybel’s presentation will argue that scaling an organization is about keeping the values that made it great, while adding business discipline. This program will interest profit and nonprofit leaders who want to expand their organizations, and private equity partners looking at investments. Tuesday, September 27, at 7 p.m.

BRILLIANT BEACONS: A HISTORY OF THE AMERICAN LIGHTHOUSE. Eric Jay Dolin, the best-selling author of “Leviathan” will talk about his most recent book, “Brilliant Beacons,” the story of America through the prism of its beloved coastal sentinels. Against the backdrop of an expanding nation and rich in maritime lore, the book traces the evolution of America’s lighthouse system, highlighting the various struggles to illuminate the nation’s coastlines. Thursday, September 29, 7-8:30 p.m.

MELISSA ORLOV: “ADULT ADHD, RELATIONSHIPS AND YOUR FAMILY”  If you have a child with ADHD, chances are good you also have an adult with ADHD in the family. Our monthly Great Presenters series will start up on Tuesday, October 4, at 7:30 p.m. when Wayland resident Melissa Orlov will discuss the effect of ADHD across generations and provide strategies to tame the chaos. Ms. Orlov is one of the country’s top experts in this area and has written two award-winning books on this topic. She trains therapists, speaks around the world, and provides seminars and counseling for ADHD-impacted couples in need. You can find more about her at www.ADHDmarriage.com.

3D DESIGN WITH TINKERCAD  On Thursday, October 20, from 7-8:30 p.m., 3D artist Eric Carlsen will guide kids and adults through the process of creating their own 3D models using Tinkercad, a fun and free 3D design tool. We will watch the 3D printer work and the objects we create will be printed after the workshop. Attendance needs to be limited, so registration is required. Register via the event calendar on the Wayland Library website. You MUST be 12 or older to register on your own, but we encourage parents of younger kids to register and design with their children.

GIRLS WHO CODE CLUB AT THE WAYLAND LIBRARY. Calling all girls interested in learning how to code! We are launching a Wayland branch of the National Girls Who Code Club. The mission of GWC is to help bridge the gender gap in technology fields. Girls will learn Scratch, JavaScript, AppInventor, Python, HTML/CSS and more to build graphics, videogames, and websites. The club will meet every Tuesday from 4-6 p.m. during the school year, staring on October 18 and will be run by Wayland parent volunteers. We need to limit the club to 15 girls. Girls in grades 6 to 12 are welcome to register through the event calendar on our website. If you can, bring your own laptop, but this is not required. Questions? MORE VOLUNTEER COMPUTER PROGRAMMERS NEEDED  Are you passionate about getting teen girls coding? We are launching a Wayland branch of the national “Girls Who Code” club and are seeking additional volunteer instructors. If you are interested in helping out and have basic computer programming skills, apply online at girlswhocode.com/volunteer and choose Wayland Public Library as your site. Questions?   • Weekly Storytimes!
    • Mother Goose Time (Infants-2.5 years) most Tuesday mornings, 10:30-11 a.m.
    • StoryVine (2.5 -5 years) most Thursday mornings from 10:30-11 a.m.
  • Parent-Child Book Group, Wednesday, September 14, at 7 p.m. for third and fourth graders with a parent. September’s book for discussion is “The One and Only Ivan” by Katherine Applegate.
  • Zumba Kids Jr. Tuesday, September 27, 10:3-11 a.m. for children ages 2.5 to 4 years old
  • STEAM Team: Cool Chemistry, Wednesday, September 28, 3-4 p.m. for ages 5 and up. Kids will explore the amazing properties of water, baking soda, vinegar, soap, and milk in several hands-on experiments.
  • Spanish Storytime, Wednesday, September 28, 10:30-11 for ages babies to 5 years old. Children and their caregivers are invited to join us for stories, songs and fingerplays in Spanish.
  • Lego Club, Wednesday, October 5, 2016 3-4 p.m. for ages 5 and up. Children will make fabulous creations out of Legos.
  • Sing-along with Jeannie Mack.  Thursday, October 6, 10:30-11:15 a.m. for babies-age 5 with caregiver. Jeannie Mack will perform all kinds of fun, bounce-around, sing-along songs geared for young children.
  • Book Buddies, Monday, October 24, 4-5 p.m. for children in grades K to 2 with an adult. This month local parent and author Giselle Shardlow will read her picture book “Trish’s Fall Photography” and teach children the poses presented in the book. We will also do a craft.

Intro to the iPhone and iPad. Thursday, October 13, 2 p.m. Come if you have some experience with your iPhone/iPad, but feel like you might be missing out on some of the basics. Be sure to bring your iPhone or iPad with you.

OCTOBER BOOK DISCUSSIONS FOR ADULTS. The library runs several adult book groups, and new members are always welcome. For more information about any of the groups, call the library at 508-358-2311.

Shen Yun Symphony Orchestra history. Volunteers of Shen Yun, a non-profit organization that works to keep Chinese cultural history alive, will present the history of Shen Yun, its significance in today’s world, and even share snippets of the Shen Yun Symphony Orchestra’s performance. Tuesday, September 20, 7 p.m.

HIGH SCHOOL ROBOTICS TEAM DEMONSTRATION. On Saturday, September 24, 10:30 a.m-12:30 p,m. come to the library’s upper parking lot and check out the Wayland High School First Robotics Challenge Team (“the Control Freaks”) and their 2016 competition robot.

ENGLISH CONVERSATION GROUP. Do you know someone who is learning basic English? The library is starting an English conversation group for beginning and advanced beginning English speakers. This group is ideal for people who want to practice their English and learn about American culture. We will meet two Fridays each month from 10:30-11:30 a.m. The next session will be on September 9 and 30. Also, English-language learners at any level can apply for a free, one-on-one, English-language tutor. Applications are available at the adult circulation desk.

knittingNEEDLEWORK/HANDWORK GROUP. Our needlework group, which is open to all, will start up again in September. This group, facilitated by Ann Moses, welcomes any adult who quilts, embroiders, knits, or does any type of hand work. This year’s dates are the following: October 5, November 2, December 7, January 4, February 1, March 1, April 5, and May 3.

SEPTEMBER ART EXHIBITS. This month the library’s foyer contains paintings by artist Leah Litin and the Raytheon Room features the photograph of David Nelson.

Join us for a discussion to learn what warning signs of an abusive relationship may look like and how to support a loved one in an abusive relationship. The new app pulls the mobile library experience together in one great package. You can use the app to search the digital and physical library catalogs, reserve available materials. scan books you want to read with the camera to see if the library has a copy, place holds, and learn about upcoming events at the library. Come to the library to learn more about it on the following Thursdays from 4-5 p.m.: September 22, October 6, and October 20.
