News and Events from the Wayland Library, August 5, 2016

waylandfiretruckFIREFIGHTER TODD WITH FIRE TRUCK. Last month we had to cancel a visit from Firefighter Todd, who was scheduled to bring his fire truck to the library. We are delighted to say that the visit has been rescheduled for next week on Friday morning, August 12, from 10:30-11:30am. Wayland Firefighter Todd Winner will talk to kids about fire safety and then give them a tour of his fire truck. For ages 3 and up.

LIBRARY PAGES NEEDED. The library is accepting applications for two available positions as a high school page starting this fall. Responsibilities include shelving materials, emptying the book drop, and other related tasks. Starting in September, pages work one Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and one Sunday 2-5 p.m. every four weeks. We have some optional hours to fill on summer Saturdays from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. If you are interested, contact MJ Wright at mwright@minlib.net or call the library at 508-358-2311 and ask for MJ.

AUGUST ART EXHIBITS. This month the Raytheon Room features calligraphy by Jiuqing Zhou and the library’s foyer contains the art of Wayland High School senior Abby McCarthy.

ENGLISH CONVERSATION GROUP Do you know someone who is learning basic English? The library is starting an English conversation group for beginning and advanced beginning English speakers. This group is ideal for people who want to practice their English and learn about American culture. We will meet two Fridays each month from 10:30-11:30am. The first two sessions will be on September 9 and 30. Also, English-language learners at any level can apply for a free, one-on-one, English-language tutor. Applications are available at the adult circulation desk.

my new rootsCLEAN EATING BOOK CLUB. Explore clean eating approaches potluck style! Participants make a recipe from a selected cookbook to share. Our next meeting is on Thursday, August 11, 6-7:30 p.m. and we will be cooking from “My New Roots: Inspired Plant-Based Recipes for Every Season” by Sarah Britton. While enjoying our homemade delights, we’ll discuss the book, its author, and what each has to offer. tumbling turner sisters

JULIETTE FAY AT THE SENIOR CENTER. The COA is partnering with the library for our first Wayland Summer Read! Wherever you head this summer, consider taking along Juliette Fay’s new book, “The Tumbling Turner Sisters,” the story of a family in vaudeville. Juliette is a resident of Wayland and author of several popular books, and this is her first foray into historical fiction. Juliette will reprise her spring presentation of “The Tumbling Turner Sisters” at the Council on Aging, on Tuesday, August 16, at 1:30 p.m. All are welcome to learn the fascinating history she uncovered in her research while writing the book.

SPECIAL YOUTH SUMMER PROGRAMS

  • Balance, Motion and Newton, 8/8, 2:30-3:30 p.m. for ages 5 and up. A science educator from Hightouch Hightech New England will help kids understand why things balance, how things move, and all the forces that impact motion. We will have FUN while we learn how to trick gravity and make objects balance or fall down!
  • Make your own Olympic Medal, 8/11, 3-4 p.m. for ages 4 and up. Drop by to shape and decorate your own Olympic medal out of dough and take it home to harden.
  • pajama storytimePajama Storytime and Stuffed Animal Sleepover, 8/15, 6:30-7 p.m. for ages 3 and up. Come for a story time in pajamas and leave your special stuffed animal friends overnight at the library for a sleepover. Kids are invited back to the library the next morning at 10:30 a.m. to see a slideshow of the fun their special animal friends had overnight at the library.
  • Ice Cream Social, 8/18, 3:30-4:30 p.m. for all participants in our Summer Reading Program
    Celebrate your summer reading by making your own ice cream sundae.

knittingNEEDLEWORK/HANDWORK GROUP. Our needlework group, which is open to all, will start up again in September. This group, facilitated by Ann Moses, welcomes any adult who quilts, embroiders, knits, or does any type of hand work. It meets on the first Wednesday of each month from 10-12 a.m. in Raytheon Room at the library. Members share ideas and resources. We also chat and socialize as we work on new or UFO’s (unfinished projects). It is a relaxed, enjoyable group.
