MEET THE ARCHITECT JUNE 8—HELP REIMAGINE OUR LIBRARY!   Come meet our design team from Tappé Architects, hear about the progress of their investigation of the three possible library sites, and tell them your ideas about what spaces the next Wayland Library contain and how it should look. Wednesday, June 8, at 7 p.m. in the Large Hearing Room of the Wayland Town Building. Please note the change of location from the library to the Town Building.

LIBRARY SPACES SURVEY.   Please take Tappé Architects’ survey so that they can better understand how Wayland residents use the library, what you value in the library, and what you would like to see in a future facility. Just go to waylandlibrary.org to take the survey online or ask for a paper survey at the circulation desk.

CLOSED MEMORIAL DAY.    We will be closed on Monday, May 30, for Memorial Day.

3D DESIGN WORKSHOPS.  On Thursday, June 30, at 7 p.m., 3D artist Eric Carlsen and assistants will return to the library to introduce teens and adults to the process of creating 3D models using Blender, a powerful and sophisticated 3D design tool. Eric will also give an “Advanced Blender” workshop for people who are already familiar with Blender on Thursday evening, May 26, at 7 p.m. Attendance at these workshops needs to be limited, so please register through our website calendar.

Manga workshop for teens.  Manga Artist Kat Klockow will talk about all the steps that go into drawing comics and the cultural differences and similarities between Japanese manga and American comics. For teens in grades 6 through 12. Tuesday, May 31, from 2:45-4:15 p.m.

NEEDLEWORK/HANDWORK GROUP.  Our next needlework group facilitated by Ann Moses will meet on Wednesday, June 1, 10-12 noon.

Wayland Summer Read.  Join us for our first community-wide summer read! We’ve selected Wayland resident Juliette Fay’s new book, “The Tumbling Turner Sisters,” historical fiction about a family performing vaudeville. The book is so new that we kick off our program Thursday, June 9, 7 p.m. at the author’s book launch at Sandy Burr Country Club where the Juliette will formally present the book and get us excited to read it. On Sunday, September 18, at 3 p.m. the author will join us in the library for a casual book discussion. So read the book and be prepared to come with your thoughts and questions in the fall. Extra copies will be available in the library to take on your summer adventures.

COMMUNICATE BETTER! Learn some energy self-management techniques and how they can help you communicate and lead from a place of personal power. Presenter Rachel Rice is the founder and CEO of Five Rhythms Consulting and has spent the majority of her career in corporate leadership roles, most recently as CMO for New York Life Retirement Plan Services, overseeing marketing, product development, web strategy, and creative execution. Rachel helps clients integrate mind/body practices into their business routine and leadership style to drive the best possible outcomes for themselves and their organizations. Monday, June 13, 7-8 p.m.

RICHARD POWERS–THE SURREAL LIFE OF A SCIENCE FICTION ARTIST. At our last Great Presenters program for the seaons on Tuesday, June 7, at 7:30 p.m., Wayland resident Kathy Powers Sherry and her brother Richard will talk about the life and prolific career of their father, Richard “Gorman” Powers. He is widely regarded as the single most influential artist in the history of paperback illustrative art and was recently inducted into the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame. His influential career spanned over four decades during which he produced jacket illustrations for some 1,200 science fiction novels. During June, Powers’ art will be on display in the library.

PIZZA/STUDY NIGHTS FOR WHS STUDENTS  During Wayland High School finals week, the library will be open late until 11 p.m. on the evenings of June 14-16 (Tuesday-Thursday) for high school students who want to study for exams. We will serve pizza a little after 5 p.m. on those evenings to teens who are here during the dinner hour and will also provide some snacks throughout the evening.

FOREIGN FILM SERIES–VALENTIN  Argentinian filmmaker Alejandro Agresti turns his lens to his own childhood in this nostalgic coming-of-age tale set in the director’s hometown of Buenos Aires, circa 1964. Screening will be Tuesday, June 21, from 6:30-9 p.m.
