News and Events from the Wayland Library, March 20, 2016

HELP SHAPE THE FUTURE OF YOUR LIBRARY. We are updating the Library’s Long Range Plan! Join us in a moderated discussion of the library services, facilities, and programs that you want at YOUR Library. Come to a public forum on Monday, March 21, 7 p.m. or Saturday, March 26, 10 a.m. Long-Range Plan is an important planning tool for the Trustees and the Library Director. Please come and be heard. For more information, please contact Library Director Ann Knight (aknight@minlib.net, 508-358-2311) or Library Trustee Chair Aida Gennis (wgs3155@gmail.com).

LIBRARY ARTICLES AT TOWN MEETING. The Board of Library Trustees encourages residents to attend Annual Town Meeting, which begins Thursday, April 7 at 7:30 p.m., and vote YES on Article 17, 18, and 19. The Trustees are sponsoring these three articles for consideration because they are essential steps in the completion of the Planning and Design Study funded by Special Town Meeting last fall. To qualify for a state library construction site, the Trustees must investigate at least two sites. One of those sites will clearly be the current site of the library at 5 Concord Road. Articles 17 and 18 will allow the study’s architect to investigate the former DPW site or 202 Old Connecticut Path near Greenways. Article 19 will allow the library building to be connected to the municipal wastewater system, which will allow the removal of the septic tank. This will expand what is considered “buildable land” at the current library site and give the architect the most flexibility in the investigation.

LIBRARY HOURS

  • The library will be closed on Easter, Sunday, March 27.
  • On Monday, April 4, the library will be closed from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. to allow the entire library staff to participate as a team in our long-range planning process. The library will open promptly at 1 p.m.

WAYLAND AUTHOR EVENT.  Mark your calendars for Saturday, April 2, 1-4 p.m. when we will showcase 20 of Wayland’s authors on the main floor with presentations in the Raytheon Room. Some authors will have books for purchase, but the main goal is connect local readers with local authors. Check out our online calendar or the library webpage under Services>Programs for info about authors and the schedule. Please note: Those needing quiet space in the library this day, should seek an alternative location.

GIRL SCOUT EXHIBIT.  In March, we all start thinking about Girl Scout cookies! It seems appropriate that this month our lower lobby case contains a display celebrating Juliette Gordon Low, the founder of Girl Scouting in the United States.

IS YOUR PERSONAL TECHNOLOGY HELPING OR HINDERING YOU?  Smart, mobile, social. Personal technology is all around us…and on us. These tools are fun, convenient, and even indispensable, but are we experiencing trade-offs and drawbacks? Are we aware of unintended effects that are keeping us from living and working more fully? Join Cynthia Cheng Correia at the library on Tuesday, April 5, at 7:30 and examine how personal technology impacts us and discuss how we can evaluate and manage our technology to get the most out of it…and life. Ms. Cheng Correia is Managing Director of Knowledge inForm, a competitive intelligence consultancy, and an instructor at the Simmons College School of Information Science. She is also a founder of The Work-Life Collaborative, which helps individuals and families enhance their work-life quality and harmony.

In addition to step-by-step guidelines from plotting and characterization to creating villains and foils, she will answer questions and help aspiring authors on the path to preparing a book for publication.
