News and Events from the Wayland Library, November 20, 2015

library logoTHANKSGIVING HOURS.  The library will close Wednesday, November 25, (the day before Thanksgiving) at 6 p.m. and remain closed until we re-open at our usual time on Saturday, November 28, at 10 a.m.

FAMILY SING-ALONG WITH DAVID POLANSKY  During the Wayland Center Holiday Open House, on Sunday, December 6, from 3-4 p.m., musician David Polansky will get us all singing traditional and new songs that celebrate the winter season and holidays. David has written many award-winning songs and as a result of being a musician for so many years, his repertoire of standards is enormous. For the most part, if you wish to hear it, he can play it. So, come with your requests!

3D DESIGN WITH TINKERCAD  On Thursday, December 17, 7-8 p.m. 3D artist Eric Carlsen will guide teens and adults through the process of creating their own 3D model using Tinkercad, an easy and fun 3D design tool. We will be printing out the creations! Workshop attendance is limited, so registration is required. You MUST be 12 or older to register on your own, but we encourage parents of younger kids to register and design with their children. Register through our event calendar at waylandlibrary.org.

CALLING ALL TEEN CRAFTERS!  On Thursday, December 10, from 2:45-4 p.m. we will have beading, duct tape crafts, knitting, crafts made from recycled books, and more in the Raytheon Room for crafting. For teens in grades 6-12.

BOOK-A-LIBRARIAN  The librarians at the Wayland Public Library love to help patrons, but sometimes they need more time than is available on a drop-in basis. With the Book-a-Librarian service, librarians will meet with patrons in half hour sessions to personally address such things as research questions, technology assistance, downloading ebooks, resume/job search assistance and more. Please call 508-358-2311, ext. 24 to set up an appointment with one of our Reference Librarians.

HIGHER EDUCATION IN THE 21st CENTURY: WHO NEEDS IT?  On Tuesday, December 1, at 7:30 p.m. our Great Presenters Series features Wayland resident Dr. Antoinette Hays, President of Regis College. At Regis, Dr. Hays has been instrumental in developing and implementing new programs, and she will talk about how we can ensure that all members of our society receive an education that will allow full and continuing participation in this dynamic period of American economic history. In addition to her expanding roles at Regis from Professor to Dean to President, she has, since 2007 (pre-Haitian earthquake), co-developed the Regis College Haiti Project aimed at educating Haitian nursing faculty.

DRUM CLINIC/DEMO WITH KEVIN FORTUNATO  Rhythm is for everyone! Explore the drum set with educator, author, clinician, and Wayland resident Kevin Fortunato on Sunday, December 13, 3-4 p.m. in the library’s Raytheon Room. Whether you’re a novice, a seasoned pro, or have no experience at all, come attend this entertaining and educational exploration of drumming. From Jazz to Latin and Rock, Kevin will demonstrate techniques, coordination, and pretty much everything in between. Learn more by checking out Kevin’s YouTube videos.

UPCOMING KIDS’ PROGRAMS

  • Spanish Storytime  Wednesday, November 25, 10:30-11 a.m. for ages babies to 5 years old.  Children and their caregivers are invited to join us for stories, songs and fingerplays in Spanish.  Niños y sus cuidadores están invitados a una sesión de cuentos, canciones y juegos con los dedos en español.  
  • Lego Club  Wednesday, December 2, 3-4 p.m. for ages 5 and up.  Children will make fabulous creations out of Legos. This month’s theme: Star Wars  
  • Sing-along with Jeannie Mack  Thursday, December 3, 10:30-11:15 a.m. for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers with caregiver.  Jeannie Mack will perform all kinds of fun, bounce-around, sing-along songs geared for young children.  
  • Book Buddies Monday, December 7, 3-4 p.m. for children in grades K to 3 with a parent/caregiver.This parent/child book group is jointly run with the WCPA, BUT all are welcome. This month’s book is “The Giving Tree” by Shel Silverstein. We will discuss the book and make our own Giving Tree.
  • Decorate a Gingerbread House  Wednesday, December 9, 3:30-4:30 p.m. for ages 4 and up.  We will listen to gingerbread stories and then decorate a Gingerbread House and Gingerbread Men.  
  • Drop-in Winter and Holiday Crafts  Wednesday, December 16, 3-4 p.m. for ages 4 and up.  Kids will librarian Elise Katz and make fabulous crafts for the season.  

LIBRARY TECH WORKSHOPS  We are offering some introductory workshops to help you keep up with technology. Here’s what’s coming up:

  • Apps for Organization, Friday, December 4, 11 a.m.-12 noon.  If you have an iPhone or iPad, there are some great apps to help you keep organized. Come to a class where we will learn about Grocery IQ, Paperless, and GoodReads. You’ll also learn some organizational tips built right into your device. Please come to class with your Apple I.D. and password.
  • Intro to the iPhone/iPad, Wednesday, December 9, 2 p.m.  You have some experience with your iPhone/iPad, but feel like you need some help with the basics. We’ll discuss organizing icons, the difference between SIRI and dictation, battery life, and other basics of these versatile and complex devices. Be sure to bring your iPhone or iPad to class.
  • OverDrive: The Library eBook App, Monday, December 14, 2-3 p.m.
  • Discover how easy it is to find, reserve, and download library ebooks and eAudiobooks. You’ll also learn how to modify the print size and color, and how to create bookmarks. Bring your Apple ID and password.
  • Commonwealth Catalog Workshop, Monday, December 14, 10-11 a.m. The Commonwealth Catalog (ComCAT for short) has now replaced our old “Virtual Catalog” and will soon give you self-service access to every requestable public library book in Massachusetts, as well as to some academic collections. Come learn more about this valuable resource.

HANDWORK GROUP  This group, led by Ann Moses, welcomes any adult who quilts, embroiders, knits, or does any type of hand work. We meet on the first Wednesday of each month from 10-12 a.m. to share ideas and resources in the Raytheon Room. If you have any questions please call or email annbmoses@gmail.com or 508-358-7113. DECEMBER FOREIGN FILM  Our next foreign film, “Devdas,” will screen on Tuesday, December 15, at 6:30 p.m. in the Raytheon Room. Set in the early 1900s, this tragic love story follows Devdas Mukherjee upon his return home to India after having spent ten years in London studying law. Devdas’s wealthy family prohibits him from marrying his childhood sweetheart, and his life spirals out of control as he takes up alcohol and a life of vice to numb the pain. Based on a classic Indian novel by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhy. (185 minutes, in Hindi with English subtitles.)

GENEALOGY GROUP FORMING  Want to explore your family history or are you currently in the middle of a genealogy project? Come to the library where we plan to offer monthly opportunities to connect with fellow genealogists for inspiration and support. Librarian Rachel Sideman-Kurtz will be on hand with guidance and resources. She is also available for one-on-one research assistance at other times to get you started or help find a missing piece of information. For more information, contact Rachel at rsideman@minlib.net. The first meeting will be January 13 at 7 p.m.
