CLIMATE OPEN HOUSE at 6 Melville Place, Wayland MA 01778
THIS SUNDAY Nov 22,12-2pm!

An invitation from Sabine von Mering:

Climate change is happening, and unless we take drastic action human life will eventually become impossible on planet earth. That is no exaggeration. Just watch the first 12 minutes of this, or this TED Talk by James Hansen if you want to learn more.

This winter global leaders are convening in Paris to agree to reduce greenhouse gases. But their agreement will not be binding, and it will not be able to prevent average global temperatures from increasing dramatically. Sea levels will rise. Crazy storms and droughts will increase. Within this century we are likely to see conditions that no humans have ever experienced on planet earth.

So far average global temperature has only risen by about 1 degree Celsius—and look what devastation it has already caused. Melting arctic ice, raging wildfires, ever more severe storms and droughts. Climate scientists warn that temperatures could rise by as much as 6 degrees Celsius this century if we do not take drastic action. That’s similar to going from a light fever to fatally high temperature. Agriculture at the scale we need to feed 7+ billion people will eventually become impossible. All this is frightening. We are the first generation to feel the effects of climate change, and the last generation that CAN actually do something about it before we reach tipping points of no return: We can urge our leaders to take action, we can make sure our communities become resilient, and we can reduce our own carbon footprint, which is still higher than anywhere else in the world.

I would like to invite you to my house on Sunday November 22nd from 12 to 2pm for a Climate Open House to talk about what we can do to reduce our carbon footprint, to support the right policies, to become a more resilient community here in Wayland (and beyond)—and to support each other!

I have invited representatives from DirectEnergy Solar and Meacham Heating and Cooling to talk about solar panels and electric heatpumps, and Mercedes Benz Somerville has agreed to come over and offer rides in an electric Smart.  You can also learn more about local climate action from 350Massachusetts for a Better Future (350MA.org), especially about the big rally in Boston on December 12 called “Jobs, Justice, Climate”.
