Interim Communication from the Wayland School Committee on METCO Revolving Account

The School Committee posted the following announcement on 8/6/15:  Interim Communication from the Wayland School Committee.

The School Committee would like to give the community an update on the METCO revolving account matter. In its July 21, 2015 Open meeting Law decision concerning the School Committee, the Attorney General publicly disclosed that the Committee discussed in executive session the “referral of a matter for potential criminal investigation” and that the Attorney General understood from a “conversation with Committee’s counsel that the investigation is still ongoing, and that the Committee is periodically assisting investigators in their work.”

On February 6, 2014, the School Committee referred this matter to a state agency, an investigative body that has specific, relevant expertise in this area with subpoena powers. This state agency had strongly requested and legal counsel had advised the Committee that it not comment on the referral of the matter to this state agency, which it must honor legally or possibly bring harm to and discredit individuals or the Town. So we followed that direction. However, now that the Attorney General has disclosed this referral, the Committee felt it necessary to also provide this information to the community.

This process has taken a great deal of time and it will still take more time to be completely resolved. We understand how frustrating that can be, but the School Committee will provide updates to the community as soon as they become available.

We thank you for your patience and understanding.
