every hero has a storySUMMER READING FOR KIDS. Summer is here! The theme for this year’s Summer Reading Program for children in grades preK-5 is “Every Hero Has a Story.” On Thursday, June 25, at 2 p.m. Comic Mime Robert Rivest will kick off our Summer Reading program with an interactive mime performance: “Every Hero Has a Great Story!” for ages 5 and up. There will be other great programs throughout the summer: a puppet show, a live animal program, drop-in crafts, and visitsunmask2 from local heroes, including a firefighter (with truck!) and a police officer. Registration for “Every Hero Has a Story” begins on Tuesday, June 23. Children can sign up at the library (and get a super hero goodie bag) or online at the Children’s’ section of waylandlibrary.org. Kids can keep track of their reading online or on a paper log. We will celebrate the children’s reading with an ice cream bash on Thursday, August 13. The theme for the Teen Summer Reading program for youth in grades 6-12 is “Unmasked.” Teens who register online at the Teen section of waylandlibrary.org and write at least one original book review will win a prize.

PERSIAN GLORY AND ISLAMIC REVOLUTION WITH BARRY PELL  Photojournalist and world traveler Barry Pell will be at the library on Tuesday, July 14, at 7:30 p.m. for a program on Iran. Pell traveled nearly 4,000 miles through the country’s magnificent landscape, visiting historic cities and monuments and meeting with Iranian people who openly shared opinions about their lives and relations with America. With a history dating 2,500 years, the Persian Empire was the largest of ancient times, extending from Central Asia to North Africa. The legacy of this power and wealth is manifest in the stunning tiled architecture of mosques and secular mansions, the distinctively spiced cuisine, the arts and crafts including arguably the world’s most beautiful rugs, and the diverse people who comprised the Empire as invaders or subjects. Iran’s recent history is marked by religious rule following the 1979 Islamic revolution. This program will be accompanied by Mr. Pell’s photography.

LIBRARY WORKSHOPS

The library is running some workshops, described below, to help people keep abreast with the techy world. Space is limited, and registration is recommended for all classes. Register by going to “Events” at waylandlibrary.org or by calling the library at 508-358-2311.

  • An Introduction to Apps for iPhone/iPad, Monday, June 22, 2-3 p.m.   People who have smartphones and iPads throw around the “app” word like it’s the most fashionable ice cream. Want to know about apps and how to find and download good ones from Apple’s app store? Discover some new ways to use your iPhone or iPad with various apps. Instructor: M.J.
  • Class for First Time iPhone/iPad Users, Wednesday, July 22, 2-3 p.m.  You’ve just taken your iPhone/iPad out of the box. You feel clueless about what to do except if it means making a phone call. This is the class for you! We will talk about how to connect to Wi-Fi, take a picture, find the photos you’ve taken, use the 3 keyboards, send a text message, and learn about different kinds of touches: swiping. touching, touch and hold. There will be time for questions at the end. Instructor: M.J.
  • OverDrive for Kindle, Thursday, June 25, 12-1 p.m.  Do you love your Kindle but are you frustrated with borrowing and downloading from the library? Amazon does deliver Kindle versions of library ebooks you borrow through OverDrive, but the process is (frankly) more complicated than it needs to be. We’ll download to your wireless Kindle devices (or apps!) and we’ll discuss how to work with older Kindles that connect via USB. We’ll have some laptops to use, but you’ll need to bring: your Library Card Number and PIN, your Kindle, and your Amazon username and PIN. Instructor: Matt Amory

ONE-ON-ONE TECHNOLOGY ASSISTANCE  Need assistance with downloading an eBook? Not sure how to use voice dictation on your iPhone or iPad? Need to learn how to create group contacts in your Gmail account? Maybe we can help! Schedule a one-on-one appointment for assistance with basic technology questions. Half-hour slots are available Monday, July 6, from 2-3 p.m. To schedule, contact librarian M.J. Wright at 508-358-2311.

SELFIE SHOW!   Self-portraiture has been a staple of artistic practice for centuries. As individuals in the digital age, we have more control of the construction of our own identity than ever. Arts/Wayland and the Wayland Local initiated a selfie contest by asking Wayland residents to share their selfies. They received amazing selfies that deserve to be exhibited and shared. The Selfie exhibition will be held in the library’s Raytheon Room during the month of July. Drop in to see it sometime. The public is invited to an opening reception for the Selfie Show on Wednesday, July 1, from 5-7 p.m.

CLEAN EATING COOKBOOK CLUB  Like to cook? Enjoy eating healthy or need inspiration to be healthier? Check out our new Clean Eating Cookbook Club where we will explore clean eating approaches potluck style! Participants will make a recipe from a selected cookbook to share. While enjoying our homemade delights, we’ll discuss the book, its author, and what each has to offer. The first meeting is Thursday, July 9th at 6 p.m. To introduce ourselves to clean eating, we’ll start with two cookbooks: “Clean Food” by Terry Walters and “Clean Slate: A Cookbook and Guide” by the editors of “Martha Stewart Living.” You choose which book to use. Copies are available at the circulation desk for checkout. For more information, contact Sarah Hogan (shogan@minlib.net) or Rachel Sideman-Kurtz (rsideman@minlib.net) at 508-358-2311.
