News and Events from the Wayland Library, May 8

Wayland LibraryLIBRARY CLOSED MONDAY MORNING, MAY 18. A new gas boiler will be installed at the library on May 18, 19, and 20. On the first morning of the installation, Monday, May 18, the extremely noisy drilling into our concrete foundation will make the library an unpleasant place to be. Therefore, we will be closed that morning until 12 noon.

PAM SWAY HONORED AT MLA.  Retired Assistant Children’s Librarian Pam Sway was honored at the Massachusetts Library Association’s Gala Dinner on May 4th for her outstanding library service. She was also given a certificate in recognition of her retirement. In her more than twenty years of service, Pam Sway gave extraordinary library service to our patrons. It was wonderful to see her receive this well-deserved honor at MLA.

NEW ASSISTANT CHILDREN’S LIBRARIAN.  Please join us in welcoming our new Assistant Children’s Librarian, Amy Horning. Ms. Horning comes to Wayland from the Lexington Public Library, where she has been working in children’s services. She is a graduate of the University of Michigan and Wayne State University. Her first day will be May 18, and we are delighted to have her aboard! On Wednesday, May 27, at 3 p.m., Ms. Amy will lead a “From Garden To Table” program where children ages 4 and up will learn how to care for seedlings, taste delicious veggies, and plant seeds to take home to their gardens.

tinkercad3D DESIGN WITH TINKERCAD.  On Tuesday, May 19, 7-8 p.m., 3D artist Eric Carlsen will guide teens and adults through the process of creating their own 3D model using Tinkercad, an easy and fun 3D design tool. We will be printing out the creations! Workshop attendance needs to be limited, so registration is required. You MUST be 12 or older to register. Register through our online calendar at waylandlibrary.org. Watch for additional programs designing in Blender and TinkerCad this summer.

NEW LIBRARY WEBSITE   The Wayland Library has a new website at waylandlibrary.org. We are excited to be able to update our look and hope that the new site will provide better access to the many wonderful resources that we offer our users. The new design was funded by the Library Trustees through the Draper Fund. Some of the new site is still under development, so please be patient if you hit a broken link or an area under construction!    

AUTHOR RON MCADOW.  Ron McAdow, former executive director of Sudbury Valley Trustees and the author of a popular local river guide, has just published a novel, “Ike.” On Wednesday, May 20, at 7 p.m. Ron will be at the library to tell us about his new book, which is set in a Massachusetts town he calls Westforest. Ron will introduce his major characters and themes and describe the process of writing a first novel while in his sixties.

STRATEGIES FOR MANAGING THE WEB PRESENCE OF YOUR LOCAL BUSINESS.  The Internet continues to evolve, affecting both our lives and our businesses. Local businesses are often at a disadvantage on the Internet. Hear about strategies to deal with the mobile revolution, gradual change in expectations, social networks, and how to manage and grow your business through its web presence. Learn about some of the common mistakes business owners make and how to avoid them. For the past three years, presenter Gevorg Abrahamian has devoted his nights and weekends to helping local business owners improve their web presence, grow, and compete more effectively on the Internet. Tuesday, May 12, 7 p.m.

GREAT DECISIONS 2015.  Our next Great Decisions meeting will be in the Raytheon Room on Friday, May 15, from 9:15-11:30 a.m. The topic will be “India Changes Course.”

LEGO CLUB.  On Wednesday, May 13, from 3-4 p.m. children ages five and up can drop in and make fabulous creations out of Legos. This month’s theme: Ships and Boats

BABY SIGNING. Come to the library on Thursday, June 4, from 10:30-12 noon to learn about baby signing.  Signing reduces frustration and gives a baby the ability to communicate before knowing how to speak. For infants to preverbal, with a caregiver. The program will be led by Sheryl White.

mariokartTEEN MARIO KART Wii TOURNAMENT.  On Wednesday, May 20, from 1:45- 4:00 p.m., teens are invited to a Mario Kart Wii Tournament. There will be other video and board games as well. Open to all teens. The tournament will be run by Robert Lorino, gamer, and recent graduate of Simmons Library School. Location: Library’s Raytheon Room

FOREIGN FILM SERIES.  The library will be screening foreign films in the Raytheon Room occasionally in the upcoming months. Our second movie, “The Deep,” is from Iceland and will be shown on Tuesday, May 26, 6:30-9 p.m. and is based on actual events. In the film a fisherman tries to survive in the freezing ocean after his boat capsizes off the south coast of Iceland. 95 minutes. In Icelandic with English subtitles.   • How to Find Your Next Great Read, Monday, May 11, 2-3 p.m. Do you struggle to find a good book to read, often wandering bookshelves for something that grabs your attention? Or, do you read the latest bestsellers or recommendations from friends to find those disappoint you? If so, this workshop is for you. We will introduce you to online tools that will make finding your next great read easy and fun.
  • google driveGoogle Drive, Thursday, May 14, 2-3 p.m.   Want to access documents from any computer for free? Would you like to easily share documents and collaborate with your family, committee, or co-workers? For many, Google Drive has replaced the need for Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Learn about this free tool that stores documents in the Cloud, not just on your personal computer.
  • overdriveOverdrive: the Library eBook App for iPhone and iPad, Monday, May 18, 2-3 p.m.  Discover how easy it is to find, reserve, and download library ebooks and eAudiobooks. You’ll also learn how to modify the print size and color, and how to create bookmarks. Bring your Apple ID and password.
  • dropboxIntroduction to DropBox, Wednesday, May 20, 10-11 a.m. DropBox is free, constantly backed-up online storage you can use for your photos and files. Come see how you can use it to organize your files and get access to them anywhere you have a web connection!

AUTHOR CARRIE RUSSELL. On Saturday, June 13, at 2 p.m., 1996 Wayland High School graduate Carrie Schneider Russell will be at the library to talk about her book, “Drowning Cactus.” She describes it as literary fiction that explores the transformative power of wilderness. The novel follows a cactus thief and an urban gardening instructor on a journey across the American landscape, from the Sonoran Desert to Walden Pond.
