Drama Kids International (DKI) brings its innovative summer workshop to Wayland August 3 through August 7, 2015, with a theme of “Heroes and Villains.”

According to Director Susie Cristiano, participants will have a “fun-filled week” as they explore all aspects of drama production – from an idea on paper to a production for friends and family – in just 5 days.  Drama Kids will be held at Wayland Middle School and is offered through Wayland School Community Programs, (WSCP) Community Education.  The Metrowest-based branch has been successfully offering programs in Wayland’s elementary schools for the past 5 years.

One unique aspect of the week-long summer program is that children will start with the theme of “Heroes and Villains,” develop characters, and write the actual play.  “We could end up with a western, a fairy tale, or even a futuristic play. It’s all up to the group, and that’s the fun part: seeing how everything unfolds,”  Cristiano said.  “They develop skills in teamwork and leadership as they work together, building their show from the ground up.”

Susie CristianoExplains Cristiano, whose background includes acting and teaching, the children will develop characters and write a play based on these characters.  “We’re aiming for a theatre arts experience that is educational and fun at the same time.” There will be improvisation, scene work, music, art, and language and character development.

Children ages 5 – 11 are eligible to participate. The hours are 9 am – 3 pm and the fee for the 30-hour program is $250. On Friday at 2 pm, the children will present the play on stage in the WMS cafeteria. Families and friends are invited.

DKI is known for offering imaginative learning experiences led by highly qualified and specially trained teachers.

Drama Kids counts among its goals building self-esteem, confidence, speaking skills, character, leadership ability, and acting skills. Its mission is to help children reveal their “abundant inner self-worth, while focusing on building life skills through dramatic play.”
