News and Events from the Wayland Library, January 23, 2015

HOLIDAY HOURS. The library will be closed on Monday, February 16, for Presidents Day.

“SOWING THE SEED: BRINGING SCIENCE TO RURAL UGANDA”. In 2009, Wayland residents Paul and Jessica Schendel went to Uganda to volunteer with a grassroots community organization. While there, they became aware of the lack of local medical services and the lack of science teaching in schools. In response to this need, they conceived the idea of the SEED Institute (Science Education to Enhance Development) to train science teachers. On Tuesday, February 3, at 7:30 p.m. they will appear as the next Great Presenters program to talk about their collaboration with local leaders in making this vision become a reality.

DECONSTRUCTION DAY. Teens, on Tuesday, January 27, from 2:45-4:45 p.m. bring old computers and other electronics to the library’s Raytheon Room to deconstruct and figure out how they work! Salvage useful parts for other projects. You might even be able to fix things if we discover how they are broken. Engineer and maker Kevin Osborn will lead this workshop. For tweens and teens in Grades 6 and up. This program is federally funded by an LSTA grant awarded by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners.

PARENT/CHILD BOOK GROUP. The next meeting of the Parent/Child Book Group will be on Tuesday, February 24, from 7-8 p.m. in the Raytheon Room. This is a group is for children in 4th and 5th grade, with a parent. Each month we discuss a different book and decide together what next month’s book will be. This month we will talk about “Gilda Joyce: Psychic Investigator” by Jennifer Allison. Led by Youth Services Librarian Pam McCuen. Questions? Call the Children’s Room at 508-358-2308.

USING ANCESTRY.COM. Do you wish you knew more about your family tree? Ever wondered if Ancestry.com could help? Well this workshop may be just for you! On Monday, February 9, from 7-9 p.m. we will take a closer look at this rich resource. We’ll cover what information it contains, how to navigate with confidence, and how to search effectively. Part lecture and part hands-on activity, participants can expect this to be a fun, low-key, and informative event. Spaces limited, so register through our online event calendar at waylandlibrary.org.   • Armchair Travel Book Group: Wednesday, February 11, at 11:30 a.m., “At the Tomb of the Inflatable Pig: Travels Through Paraguay” by John Gimlette
  • Noontime Book Group: Friday, February 13, at 12 noon, “Flight Behavior” by Barbara Kingsolver

Read to CORBYN THE SAMOYED. Children are invited to read to Corbyn, a beautiful Samoyed, in the library’s Raytheon Room on Saturday, February 14, from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Call 508-358-2308 to sign up for a 15 minute slot. Corbyn and her owner Helen are certified through Pets and People Foundation to give read-to-a-dog programs.

Sing-along with Jeannie Mack. Jeannie Mack will perform all kinds of fun, bounce-around, sing-along songs geared for young children in the Raytheon Room on Thursday, February 5, from 10:30-11:15 a.m. For babies, toddlers, and preschoolers with a caregiver.

How to Find Your Next Great Read. Do you struggle to find a good book to read, often wandering bookshelves for something that grabs your attention? Or, do you read the latest bestsellers or recommendations from friends to find those disappoint you? If so, this workshop scheduled for Tuesday, January 27, 1-2 p.m. is for you. Librarian Rachel Sideman-Kurtz will introduce you to online tools that will make finding your next great read easy and fun. Tools include Novelist, Books and Authors, and GoodReads. LET’S GET CRAFTY! During February vacation, on Wednesday, February 18, from 3-5 p.m. kids ages 4 and up can drop by to make all kinds of colorful and playful crafts during this workshop led by librarian Elise Katz. It’s time to get crafty!

CREATE THE ULTIMATE ROAD TRIP.  Might there be a road trip in your future?  If so, and you would like to start planning, this workshop on Monday evening, February 23, from 7-8 p.m. is the place to begin. Librarian Rachel Sideman-Kurtz  will demonstrate useful online map tools as well as some websites to help make planning easy, fun, and efficient.  Workshop limited to 10. ZUMBA KIDS JR. On Tuesday, January 27, from 11-11:30 a.m., Julia Walderzak of H2K Happy Healthy Kids Fitness Studio in Sudbury will be here to lead a rhythm and dance program for children ages 2.5 to 4 years old in the library’s Raytheon Room. 

THE “NEW” LIBRARY CATALOG. The library catalog is sporting a new look, but don’t panic! Yes, it looks a lot different, but it’s really not—except for some cool new features that actually make it easier to find what you want. On Monday, January 26, at 7 p.m. in the Raytheon Room reference librarian Andy Moore will guide you through the non-intricacies of the new Minuteman catalog. You’ll feel a lot more relaxed and confident—in fact, like a librarian!
