Wayland residents seek return of free cash

Wayland Town Crier 10/15/14: Wayland residents seek return of free cash. Several local residents recently asked the Board of Selectmen to authorize a special Town Meeting this fall for the purpose of returning free cash to taxpayers. During the public comment period at last week’s selectmen’s meeting, Pat Abrahamson appealed to the board, noting that “free cash now stands at $6.3 million and represents 8.8 percent of the FY15 operating budget – and that does not include $1.5 million in cash reserves in the Stabilization Funds.” According to Selectmen Chairman Joe Nolan, his board discussed the request twice, “and no member supported having a fall Town Meeting.” His personal feeling, he said, is that the town would be best served by working any surplus into next year’s budget, rather than bearing the effort and expense of at least $50,000 to hold a special Town Meeting “at this late date.”
