Foremost physician in end-of-life care to lead public forum at Regis College

Dr. Ira Byock, one of the foremost palliative care physicians in the country and author of The Best Care Possible, a Physician’s Quest to Change Care through the End of Life will speak at Regis College on Monday, April 14 from 8:00 a.m. – 9:30. The forum, Envisioning and Achieving a Brighter Future – Unprecedented Challenges & Opportunities, is presented by Regis College in partnership with The Parmenter Foundation and Parmenter Home Care & Hospice. The event is the first in what is expected to be an annual Community Collaboration for Change.

Ira Byock, MD is a leading palliative care physician, author, and public advocate for improving care through the end of life. He is Professor of Medicine at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. He served as Director of Palliative Medicine at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire from 2003 through July 2013.

Dr. Byock has been a thought leader on the ethics and practice of hospice, palliative and end- of-life care. His first book, Dying Well, (1997) has become a standard in the field. The Four Things That Matter Most, (2004) is used as a counseling tool widely by palliative care and hospice programs, as well as within pastoral care. His most recent book, The Best Care Possible (March 2012) tackles the crisis that surrounds serious illness and dying in America and his quest to transform care through the end of life.

The Public Forum is designed for healthcare educators, students and providers, business leaders, policymakers, faith leaders, and the general community. The Forum is preceded by a networking breakfast, information tables, and book sales held in the Fine Arts Center lobby from 7:00 – 7:50am.
