Groups calling for tougher seat belt laws

Wayland Town Crier 12/31/11: Groups calling for tougher seat belt laws. Advocates for stricter enforcement of the state’s seat belt law say a spate of late December highway crashes that killed two and seriously injured several others is further evidence that lawmakers must act in the New Year. Driver Alison E. Irving, 24, of Norwood, was killed when she was thrown partway out of a Ford Focus as it rolled over on Interstate 95 in Walpole, state police said. Her passenger, 25-year-old Andrew E. Costello, was also flung from the car and injured. The same day, an 8-year-old boy was among 10 people hurt in a Dec. 27 crash on I-495 in Boxborough when he was ejected from a van and pinned under it. In a third crash on Dec. 28, Gary Ostrom, 53, of West Barnstable, was killed when he was thrown from his pickup truck as it rolled over on I-95 in Mansfield. Passenger Joshua Ostrom, 19, also was ejected and flown to Mass. General Hospital with injuries. State police said all five victims thrown from vehicles in these crashes probably were not wearing seat belts. Supporters of updating Massachusetts’ seat belt law said these deaths and injuries are just the latest that might have been avoided if the state allowed police to stop drivers because they or their passengers are not buckled up.
