Music Program Seeking Beginners for Band or Orchestra

You love music, but never quite got around to playing in your school band or orchestra.
You used to play, but dropped it in high school.
You played in high school and maybe even college but career and family have taken precedent for years.
You still harbor a dream to get involved in music and are ready for a new adventure in life.

It may be time to check out the Sudbury Valley New Horizons Band or String Orchestra playing now in Wayland and attracting participants of varying levels from Metrowest and beyond.   A new session begins January 4, 2012, with new beginner classes, and the organization is always looking for new people to join the groups.  ”We welcome people with no musical background,“ explains Diane Muffitt, the program’s founder, emphasizing that absolutely no experience, talent, or music reading ability is needed.   “I am always available to talk with people about the possibilities.“

Led by Muffitt, Wayland Middle School’s longtime band director, Sudbury Valley New Horizons Music has groups for adults, ages 30 – 100+. Some groups are for beginners who have never played before; others  are for those who put down an instrument many years ago and either want to pick it up again or try something new.  For some, SVNHM is a place to finally move from taking lessons on their own to playing with others at the same level. And for the very experienced player, SVNHB offers a venue to play in a relaxed and social atmosphere.

The organization rehearses at Wayland Middle School, and is officially sponsored by the Wayland Public Schools through Wayland School Community Programs, Community Education. It was founded in 2007 by Muffitt and is part of an international music movement encouraging people of all ages to participate in music.  An Instructional Setting. For those who can’t read music, instruction is offered. The band and string programs include group lessons for beginners as well as full band and  string orchestra rehearsals.  There  are more than 80 people playing in the Wayland-based  Concert Band and String Orchestra programs.  A welcoming organization,  SVNHM leaders will remove any roadblocks to participation,  and will match people up with rides, help with instrument selection, and offer scholarships to cover tuition, if necessary.

Sudbury Valley New Horizons Music offers both musical and social opportunities. More information is available at www.svnhb.org or by calling Muffitt at 978-261-5065. Membership is open to all surrounding towns, and rehearsals are held on Wednesday nights.
