We are now on our summer schedule – Saturdays 10-1, closed Sundays but open regular hours during the week – Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday 9-9, Thursday 9-6 and Friday 9-5.
ART EXHIBIT BY CARRIE SALSBERG
Carrie Salsberg is a multimedia artist and art instructor residing in Wayland and Grantham, NH. She has studied art at UMass/Amherst and also at the DeCordova Museum, the Danforth Museum, Ava Arts Center and Gallery, the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen Arts Center, and with many local artists. Her works include acrylic painting, mixed media collage, ceramics, jewelry, mosaics, stained glass, murals, floor cloths, and decorative furnishings. Her work will be on exhibit in the library foyer during July.
OIL PAINTINGS BY NANCY MOLVIG
During July, Nancy Molvig’s oil paintings will be on exhibit in the Raytheon Room. Initially a potter, Nancy Molvig has always been intrigued with the arts. She enjoyed painting with watercolor before discovering her passion for oil painting. She has studied under numerous well known artists including David Curtis, David Lussier, Don Stone, Ron Straka, Karen Winslow, Emily Passman, and the late Bob Blue and Carleen Muniz. Formerly a resident of Concord, now living in Lincoln, she is most drawn to her native New England landscapes and seascapes for inspiration.
LOWER LEVEL DISPLAY CASE
One side of our lower level display case contains an exhibit about ukeleles, while the other side shows some examples of word clouds. Try generating some word clouds of your own by going to wordle.net!
Summer Reading Program
Registration for Summer Reading has started online at waylandlibrary.org. This year’s theme is “One World Many Stories” for children and “You Are Here” for teens. We’ll be exploring themes of travel, language, multiculturalism and storytelling. Kids can come in to the Youth Services Department to pick up their summer inspiration bags, which will include information about the program, events, and suggested reading lists, as well as thematic bookmarks and temporary tattoos. During the summer, participants can onto the summer reading website to write reviews of favorite books and read reviews that other kids have written. This summer we’re contributing to help conserve elephants in the wild. We’ll need help from our readers coming up with a name, so at the end of the summer we’ll have a vote on the name. UPCOMING YOUTH PROGRAMS
- Sing Along with Hugh Hanley, Tuesday, July 12, 11:00 a.m. Kids ages 2-7 and their sibling are invited to come to the library to participate in Hugh Hanley’s “Circle of Song.” Hanley has been singing with young children for some 25 years in his work as an early childhood educator, music specialist, and entertainer. He plays guitar and banjo and his repertoire of songs, finger-plays, and music activities are drawn from a variety of folk traditions. Hanley will get us to raise our voices, move our bodies, and join in the merriment of making music together.
- Teen Writing Workshop, Fridays in July from 10-12 noon. Starting on July 8, library staff member Emily Tersoff will conduct a series of creative writing workshop for teens. Emily is a writer who is currently studying at Simmons College to get certified as a library media specialist. She is a 2009 graduate of Bard College. This year Emily had one of her own stories accepted for publication at Strange Horizons, a weekly web-based magazine of and about speculative fiction. Teens only. - Make a Friendship Bracelet, Tuesday, July 19, 11 a.m. Kids ages 7 and up can come in and learn how to make a braided friendship bracelet using recycled materials. Registration required.
- Haiku and Tanka Poetry with Craft, Wednesday, July 20, 2-4 p.m., Kids ages 8 and up will be able to create Haiku and Tanka poetry and illustrate your poems in a beautiful folding card.
- Friday Family Flicks, Fridays, July 22 and 29 at 2 p.m.

- Worldly Crafts for Kids, Tuesday, July 26, at 11:00 a.m. Try different crafts from around the world. Ages 5 and up.
- “Everybody Says Hello!” with Mary Jo Maichack, Thursday, July 28, from 2-3 p.m. There are so many ways to say "hello" and sing and tell stories. With Mary Jo we might learn a song in Japanese, “plant" cabbages the French way, or help act out a story from Vietnam! The music and stories in her show explore other languages and cultures. Ages 3 and up.
BOSTON HARBOR ISLANDS PASS. We have a new pass for the Boston Harbor Islands. It provides 2-for-1 ferry tickets to the Boston Harbor Islands national park area to either Georges or Spectacle Islands for up to four people and is available Monday through Friday through October 8th.
