News and Events from the Wayland Library, June 10, 2011

SUMMER HOURS
Our Summer Hours (Saturdays 10-1, closed Sundays) start the weekend of June 25. The library will be closed July 2-July 4 over Independence Day weekend.

Summer Reading Program
This year’s summer reading theme is “One World Many Stories” for children and “You Are Here” for teens. We’ll be exploring themes of travel, language, multiculturalism and storytelling. Registration for Summer Reading starts online at our webiste the week of June 20. Also that week, kids can come in and pick up their summer inspiration bags, which will include information about the program, events, and suggested reading lists, as well as thematic bookmarks and temporary tattoos.  During the summer we will have a bookmark-making station and fun handouts that will change each week.

UPCOMING YOUTH PROGRAMS
  • Shadow Puppet Workshop for Kids, Thursday, June 30, 10-12 noon.  Kids can jump-start their imaginations and have fun while learning about the Balinese artistic tradition of "Wayan Kulit" or Shadow Puppetry. In this workshop we will read Balinese folktales, watch some puppetry, and discuss ideas for new folklore characters and tales. Each kid will create a movable shadow puppet by mixing animal traits together to invent a unique folklore creature. The workshop will be run by Celia Knight, who currently teaches elementary art in the Acton Public Schools and during college travelled to Indonesia to study Balinese culture and traditional arts. Grades 2-5 only. Spaces are limited, so please register through our event calendar at waylandlibrary.org.

  • Sing Along with Hugh Hanley, Tuesday, July 12, 11am.  Kids ages 2-7 and their sibling are invited to come to the library to participate in Hugh Hanley’s “Circle of Song.” Hanley has been singing with young children for some 25 years in his work as an early childhood educator, music specialist, and entertainer. He plays guitar and banjo and his repertoire of songs, finger-plays, and music activities are drawn from a variety of folk traditions. Hanley will get us to raise our voices, move our bodies, and join in the merriment of making music together.

  • Teen Writing Workshop.  On Fridays in July from 10-12 noon, starting on July 8, library staff member Emily Tersoff will conduct a creative writing workshop for teens. Emily is a writer who is currently studying at Simmons College to get certified as a library media specialist. She is a 2009 graduate of Bard College. This year Emily had one of her own stories accepted for publication at Strange Horizons, a weekly web-based magazine of and about speculative fiction. Teens only. Register through our event calendar at waylandlibrary.org.

GREAT DECISIONS
The next Great Decisions program will be Friday, June 17, at 9:15 a.m. The topic will be “Germany Ascendant.”

POETRY WORKSHOPS
This next Poetry workshop will meet on Wednesday, June 22, at 2 p.m. in the Raytheon Room. New members are welcome.

SHARMA ART STUDENT EXHIBIT
During June, the library’s Raytheon Room will feature an exhibit of landscapes and still life paintings by the students of Cecilia Sharma. Cecilia’s workshops are designed to help student painters at all levels learn how to create meaningful art and stretch the limits of their creativity. Workshops include painting demonstrations that teach how to create more excitement in finished works. Students get hands-on instruction with an emphasis on developing wash, values and textures, variety of color, edges and shapes, as well as creating the illusion of light.

MELNICOVE ARTWORK
This month the library foyer contains the work of Harold Melnicove. At the age of 95, Melnicove still enjoys his lifelong hobby of painting. His recent acrylic paintings are accented with rhinestones, which catch the light and make the images sparkle, and often include butterflies—an image inspired by his wife of 73 years, Rhona, who passed away in January.

Jasmine wins Friends’ Award
Congratulations to Jasmine Masand, this year's winner of the Friends of the Wayland Public Library Award. The Friends present this award annually to a graduating Wayland High School senior who has demonstrated intellectual curiosity and a love of literature and reading throughout his or her high school career. The recipient was chosen by the High School English Department and the award was presented during the Senior Awards Ceremony in June. The Friends wish Jasmine much success in future endeavors.

WHAT IS THE VIRTUAL CATALOG?
What should you do if the Minuteman Library Network doesn’t own the book/recorded book/magazine /DVD/CD you are looking for? Well, you can always call on one of our reference librarians for help (508-358-2311). Or you could take a first stab at helping yourself by checking out the Massachusetts Virtual Catalog, which is a link from our regular library catalog page. With the Virtual Catalog, you can search the holdings of nearly every public library in Massachusetts (including Boston’s), as well as a number of academic libraries. If you find the item you are looking for, you can place the request yourself by clicking on the blue Request button to its left. If the owning library is willing to lend it, a few more clicks and you’re done. (If the library isn’t willing—this does happen—see the reference librarian.) VC requests usually take a week to 10 days to come in. To check on your request’s status, simply log in and click the button marked “Review Your Requests.” We’ll let you know when the item arrives at our library, as with any other hold. There’s an entire commonwealth of information at your fingertips, one that was accessed almost a million times last year across Massachusetts—thanks to the Virtual Catalog!

CONROY’S OFFICE HOURS
Representative Tom Conroy will hold office hours in the library’s Raytheon Room on Friday, June 17, from 3:30-4:00 p.m.
