Visitor shares his love of music with Rivers School students

Wayland Town Crier 5/16/11: Visitor shares his love of music with Rivers School students. A young man from West Springfield, once too shy and troubled to communicate with others, led an assembly of 115 middle school students, some of whom are budding musicians, at The Rivers School in Weston on April 26. Just six years ago, Aaron Manley didn’t verbalize his thoughts or emotions or engage with others. He has since evolved into a gifted guitar player, singer and composer. Manley came out of his shell by learning how to play the guitar while attending the Robert F. Kennedy Children’s Action Corps’ Experiment with Travel School (EWT) in Holyoke, a special education day school for students with emotional, educational and behavioral issues. When Rivers student Jonah Chates of Wayland learned of Manley’s story last year, he decided to collect and donate musical instruments, including a “fluke” guitar, trumpet and a mandolin, to the Robert F. Kennedy Children’s Action Corps as part of his bar mitzvah community service project.
