Snow Reminders from Chief Irving

Chief Robert Irving reminds all Wayland residents and business owners of Town of Wayland Bylaw 139-4. Obstructing Free Passage and Bylaw 158-1 Vehicles Obstructing Work. It is prohibited for anyone to place snow in public roadways or sidewalks. The Highway Department works hard to keep the roadways cleared during snowstorms, unfortunately there are often occasions when residents or private contractors clearing driveways, push the snow into the public roads or sidewalks. This creates a hazard for pedestrians and motorists and also places an added burden on the Highway Department that must return to clear the roadway a second time.

Home and business owners are asked to keep the snow from their private ways off the public roadway and, if they employ a private contractor, to contact them and inform them of the by-law. Police officers will be enforcing the by-law, which carries a $300.00 fine.

Wayland Bylaw 158-1 requires vehicle owners to remove their vehicle from the roadway when snow and ice is being cleared. Should a vehicle be left in the roadway and interfere with the snow removal process, it may be towed at the owner’s expense. Residents are asked to monitor weather forecasts and not park on the street if snow is forecast.

The winter snow has caused road conditions to deteriorate and has limited sight line visibility due to high snow banks. Motorists are asked to use extra care and reduce speed during the winter months.
