Open Burning Permits Available Online This Year

Wayland Fire Department 12/21/10: Open Burning Permits Available Online This Year. Each year over 700 Wayland residents apply for burning permits from our fire department. This year residents can save time by registering for burning permits online using the Town of Wayland website.

Open burning in Massachusetts is regulated by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection and enforced by the local fire department. The open burning season runs from January 15th though May 1st. A valid permit must be obtained locally and permission to burn is granted on a daily basis throughout the season, depending upon weather and environmental conditions.

In the past, residents needed to travel to the Public Safety Building to obtain the permit, then call the dispatcher each day they wished to burn. By using the online process, both of these steps can be eliminated.

Starting January 1, 2011, our residents may obtain their permit simply by going to the Town of Wayland home page and following the link to obtain a permit number on line. Additionally, those residents will be able to request permission to exercise their permit on any day during the season by clicking on a separate link which will instantly inform the permit holder if open burning is being allowed that day.

The fire department will continue to offer the traditional walk-in registration for those that do not have computer access or simply prefer to visit the station.

For additional information on this matter, please email Robert Loomer, Fire Chief, or call 508-358-6910.
