HEALTHCARE REFORM:  WHAT IT MEANS TO MEDICARE, Monday, November 1, 10am.  Kathy Worhach, Community Educator for SHINE.  The newly enacted Health Care Reform (also called the Affordable Care Act) includes a number of changes to Medicare: Lower prescription drug costs, Gradual disappearance of the “Donut Hole”, Improved coverage for Preventive Care Services, Changes in what Medicare pays to health plans that cover seniors.  Be sure to join us and learn how the Affordable Care Act will affect Medicare and how to determine the best plan for you. *You will have a chance to change your coverage for 2011 during “open enrollment” in November.

ELECTION DAY, TUESDAY, November 2, Transportation to polls available at 10am; call the COA to schedule a ride.

PROPERTY TAX RELIEF OPTIONS FOR WAYLAND SENIORS, Wednesday, November 10 at 10am.  Presenters: Reps from the Assessor’s Office & COA.  Learn about abatements, exemptions and other property tax relief programs for seniors.  There will be ample time for questions as well as handouts.

TRANSPORTATION REPORT CARD – Share your experiences at our free luncheon , Wednesday, November 10 at Noon.  Come tell us about your experiences with the MWRTA  (Busy Bee vans), our medical Taxi Ticket program, our COA van and FISH.  Reservations for this free, light luncheon are required so we can order accordingly. Help us improve transportation options.

ANNUAL THANKSGIVING LUNCHEON,  Wednesday, November 17, Noon, $7  Reservations required. Featuring: Wayland High Chorus!

FLORAL ARRANGEMENT WORKSHOP,  Monday, Nov. 22, at 10am.  The Wayland Garden Club invites you to a FREE workshop. Create a take-home arrangement! Bring clippers (if you have them) and a box to carry your arrangement. Space is limited; call the COA to sign up.
 
ZUMBA – a fun, cardio work-out!  Wednesdays, 2-3pm,  Hearing Rm.  (*Please note: No class on Nov. 3 due to prep for library book sale; NO class, Wed., Nov. 24) $6.00/class: Pay only when you attend.   The dynamic rhythm of Latin and international music will magically motivate you to burn calories with simple dance moves.  Whether  you’re a natural dancer or if you think you have two left feet, this class is for all levels. Do as little or as much as you feel comfortable doing in the class. Ceil Sharon is a Zumba Gold certified instructor-a professional choreographer and a senior herself.   *Due to limited space availability and the difficult time slot of 2pm, we are still working on building up attendance. Residents who presently attend the class LOVE it and are willing to pay more per class so we can meet expenses rather than cancel.  As soon as attendance increases on a regular basis, we will reduce the current  “pay as you go” fee of $6/class. Because you pay only when you attend, try it out. Bring a friend. It’s an amazing 60 minutes.  Wear rubber soled shoes and bring a water bottle.

Please note: No class 11/ 26 & 12/3.  Leslie Worris of the Wellness Alliance teaches strategies to avoid and prevent falls.  Have fun while learning to improve your balance and increase strength.  Using balls, bands, weights and incorporating yoga and tai chi, improve your  posture, flexibility, mobility, stability, breath, endurance and maintain your independence. Pre–registration required, no less than one week before classes start.  We cannot pro-rate class fee for missed classes; participants may not join mid-session.
 
TAI CHI Wednesday,10:30-11:30am, Certified Instructor: Robin Natanel.  Pay by the month: 4 sessions in November $20 OR $8.00/class.  Learn to use the Tai Chi form to increase your physical balance and  "sense" of balance. The class begins with music and meditation, some Qi Qong breathing techniques, temple exercises for flexible joints and strength, then the Tai Chi form itself.  Class adapts to the participant’s individual needs. Tai Chi lowers blood pressure, stress levels and reduces pain.  * Tai Chi is open to non-seniors*.

LOIS’ FIT FOR THE FUTURE.  Tuesdays & Thursdays, 10 – 11 am, Hearing Room, $2/class.   (Tuesday, Oct 26 class has been relocated to Trinitarian Congregational Church, adjacent to the Town Building). Stretching, toning, aerobic fitness and weight work done to music. (Note-We can only accept exact change; please go to COA office if you need change.) No pre-registration required.  Pay only when you attend.

NEW WATERCOLOR CLASS!  Due to popularity of our WATERCOLOR CLASSES and the long waitlists, there will be a new TUESDAY CLASS offered, 10am-Noon, starting Tues., Nov. 2, 2010.  Classes run for 7 weeks; Class fee is $75.  Pre-registration required.  Explore color and  technique while receiving individualized instruction from an award winning instructor, Cecilia Sharma.  Classes are held at the Wayland Art Center (adjacent to the Cochituate Fire Station on East Plain St. and Rte. 27). Pre-registration is required for this Tuesday class. Participants provide their own art supplies.  

AMERICAN TEXTILE MUSEUM –November 16, 2010 – $25/pp. Textile Revolution: An Exploration through Space and Time. Lunch on your own at the Gazebo Café.  The fine art of French fashion comes to the American Textile History Museum in Lowell, Massachusetts, with the opening of High Style: Betsy Bloomingdale and the Haute Couture. The exhibition examines the world of haute couture through 41 ensembles donated to the FIDM Museum by Betsy Bloomingdale, wife of department store heir Alfred Bloomingdale, over the course of four decades. The works of nine of Mrs. Bloomingdale’s favorite fashion designers are featured in the exhibition. Supplementary materials include hand-drawn sketches, photographs of Mrs. Bloomingdale at many international events, as well as magazine layouts photographed by famed photographers illustrating garments she commissioned.

  • Thursday, November 4:  Russo’s in Watertown.  Pickups to start at 9 for a trip to this wonderful stores with a wide variety of different foods.  Return by 12:30.
  • Monday, November 8: Market Basket in Ashland.  Pickups start at 8:45.  Return by 1:00.
  • Wednesday, November 17: Ride to Thanksgiving Luncheon at Senior Center.  Pickups at 11:00.  Return by 1:30.
  • Monday, November 22: Trip to Market Basket in Ashland for last minute Thanksgiving needs.  Pickups to start at 8:45 and return by 1:00.
