LUNCH and JIVE – a “Pops” style picnic with the Shane Wood Jazz Trio
Wednesday, June 16, Noon at the Wayland COA
Keyboard, saxophone and drums make up the trio. Combine that with some excellent vocals, a gourmet boxed lunch (or bring your own lunch) and you’ll get “Lunch and Jive.”

The concert is free (made possible by a grant from the Wayland Cultural Council, a local agency supported by the Masaschusetts Cultural Council, a state agency). Pre-registration is required due to limited seating. Complimentary beverage will be served. Guests are welcome to bring their own lunch or to pre-order our “Pops” Boxed Lunch ($5). Box lunch orders must be made by June 11. Our “Pops” boxed lunch includes a choice of roll-up sandwich (chicken salad, seafood salad or turkey), chips, pickle, cookie and a chocolate dipped strawberry.   Call the COA (508 358 2990) for reservations.

ZUMBA and TAI CHI “TRY IT” Class in May. If you have been thinking about joining either one of these classes but you’re still not sure, new participants may take their first class free during the month of May. Just come to class and sign in. 

ZUMBA, Wednesdays, 2-3pm, Town Building Gym, $4/class
(wear rubber soled shoes, bring water bottle)  The last class before summer break is June 16, 2010. Zumba will resume in September.
 
Zumba” eliminates the “work” from “working out”. It combines irresistible Latin and international music with dynamic, yet simple exercise moves. The extraordinary secret behind Zumba is how it magically motivates the body to efficiently burn calories, effectively tones all muscle groups, incorporates full range of motion and improves the cardiovascular system.   The moves transition easily with the fabulous rhythms of salsa, merengue, samba, flamenco, reggae and more! HERE’S THE BEST NEWS: Whether you are a natural dancer or you think you have two left feet, you will enjoy this class taught by CEIL SHARON, a professional choreographer and dance school owner. She is a senior herself and a Zumba Gold certified instructor. (Zumba is back after a brief hiatus due to flooding and lack of available space. Class has resumed in the gym. This class is well worth checking out. Pay only when you attend. ($4/class). If you have never tried this class, come to a class in May. Your first session will be free.
 
TAI CHI
Wednesday, 10:30am-11:30am, Hearing Room
If not pre-registered for this class, the cost is $8.00/class (If you’re starting mid-month, attendees will be pro-rated to end of month ($5/class). Learn to use the Tai Chi form to increase your physical balance and "sense" of balance. Tai Chi allows you to physically, mentally and emotionally feel YOUR flow aligning with the flow of nature. The class begins with music and meditation, some Qi Qong breathing techniques, Temple exercises for flexible joints and strength, then the Tai Chi form itself. Class adapts to the participant’s individual needs.  Tai Chi can lower blood pressure, improve balance and reduce pain. (Pre-registration for May is $20 -4 Wednesdays). If you have been thinking about joining this class, remember that May is “Try It” month. Your first class is free. If you decide to join the class and pre-pay, your class fee will be pro-rated at $5/class. (Please note: Tai Chi class on May 12 will be held in the Town Building Gym.)

LOIS’ FIT FOR THE FUTURE   Every Tuesday & Thursday, 10—11am, Hearing Room. $2.00/class. Lois Leav, Instructor. Stretching, toning, aerobic fitness and weight work done to music. This class adapts to all fitness levels. Exercises can be modified to meet individual needs. Pay only when you come. This is enjoyable way to exercise and meet new people. No pre-registration required.

The BETTER BALANCE class, scheduled for Friday, May 14 will be held in the Wayland COA that day – not the Hearing room due to preparations for the Library’s Book Sale. Bridge, normally held in the COA/Sr. Center will be relocated to the Selectmen’s Room.

COA TRAVEL UPDATE: Only limited openings remaining on the Tanglewood and Baltimore trips. If you are considering these travel opportunities, please call as soon as possible. 

KENNEBUNKPORT, MAINE. May 19 – 20, 2010. Cost $229 double. Stay one night at the Nonantum Resort in Kennebunkport. Also on our agenda will be tours of Portland and Kennebunkport, a lobster bake, evening entertainment and a visit to Kittery, ME.

RED SOX VS BALTIMORE ORIOLES IN BALTIMORE (2 GAMES) – June 4 – 6, 2010. Cost: $439 double. Includes 2 nights accommodations, tour of Camden Yards, escorted walking tour of U.S. Naval Academy, 2 Red Sox vs. Baltimore Orioles games, time to tour Baltimore’s Inner Harbor.

MAINE LOBSTER-BAKE TOUR, BOOTHBAY HARBOR – July 28 – 30, 2010, $395/pp double. Two days of fun which will include 2 nights at Cap’n Fish’s Motel, boat cruise around picturesque Boothbay Harbor, Boothbay Playhouse show, sightseeing along the Maine coast and shopping at Freeport, three
complete meals and a delicious Lobster-bake at Gray’s On the Harbor.

TANGLEWOOD DAY TRIP – Sunday, August 1, 2010 Cost: $110/pp. Complete luncheon at the Cork ‘N Hearth nestled on the shores of scenic Laurel Lake. Seats inside the shed for a concert featuring the Boston Symphony Orchestra conducted by Charles Dutoit and highlighting YoYo Ma on cello. Call ASAP!

NORTHERN NATIONAL PARKS— September 17 – 24, 2010. Cost: $1,999/pp double. Highlights

THE FINGER LAKES REGION, NEW YORK  – August 8 – 11, 2010. Cost: $569/pp double. Includes a visit to New York State Museum, Syracuse/Skaneateles/Erie Canal, Salt Museum and the banks of Onondaga Lake, dinner cruise on the lake, William Seward Home, Sonnenberg Gardens, Fox Run Vineyards and more. Three nights lodging at the beautiful Double Tree Hotel in Syracuse and 6 other meals.

WINNIPESAUKEE RAILROAD & HART’S TURKEY FARM – Thurs., Sept. 9, 2010. Cost:$79/pp. 90- minute train ride on the Winnipesaukee scenic railroad in restored vintage coaches thru some of New England’s finest natural scenery. Then on to Meredith and nearby Hart’s Turkey Farm and sightseeing.

“CRUISE TO NOWHERE” FROM BOSTON – Sept. 24 – 25, 2010. Cost: $299/pp double. We kick off our 2-day adventure with an all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet followed by a Bon Voyage Boston show. Door to door, shared van service is provided to Wayland residents 65 years of age or older, disabled of any age, or Wayland residents 60-65years of age who have used Wayland COA van service in the past year. Pre-registration is required. Call MWRTA for further information on contact the Wayland COA. BOSTON SERVICE (including Jamaica Plain VA Hospital) is now available for rides to medical appointments only-$5.00 each way. IMPORTANT INFORMATION CONCERNING THE MWRTA “DIAL A RIDE” AND THE MWRTA FIXED BUS ROUTE:
 ► MWRTA “Dial-A-Ride”
 Effective May 1, Dial-A-Ride is a “cashless debit system”- prepaid rides. Call the MWRTA “Dial-A-Ride” at 508-820-4650. Pre-registration is required for all riders.
 Determine the frequency of your trips and fund your trip account with the MWRTA. Your account will be charged at the time your ride is provided. Call the MWRTA for further information. Accounts may be funded by personal check or credit card. Customers must maintain a positive balance in their fare account to book trips.

►MWRTA FIXED ROUTE BUS
 The MWRTA fixed route bus is for anyone, any age (certain restrictions apply). This is a fixed route looping bus. It stops at various points on Rte. 30, Rte. 9 and Rte. 27. Call Customer Service (508-935-2222) at the MWRTA for additional information and times. This is NOT a prepaid cashless system like Dial-A-Ride above. Riders must have exact fare when they board (for adults 65yr+ fare is .75/ride, adults under 65yr fare is $1.50/ride). This is a “flag down” bus at the Cochituate Ball Field (intersection of West Plain St and Pemberton Rd).         
 
For information about Wayland’s COAMedical Taxi Vouchers using JFK Transportation and FISH (Friends in Service Helping), a volunteer group providing rides to medical appointments when no other options are available, please contact the Wayland Council On Aging (508 358 2990).
 
COA VAN
The COA van has a limited number of seats, so call the COA early to reserve a spot. Unless otherwise indicated, the van driver will pick up/drop off people at their homes for all trips. (The following trips are sponsored by the COA – not MWRTA. Call the COA to make your reservation GROCERY SHOPPING at MARKET BASKET in Ashland on Monday June 7.   Pick-ups start at 9am. Return home by 1pm.
