Raising Money with Talent, Thursday, May 20 at the High School

On Thursday May 20th, Wayland High School will be hosting its second-annual, school-wide talent show. There will be 2 shows on this night: The first will be from 5-6:30 PM and the second from 7-8:30 PM. These shows are being put on to help raise money for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and The Lymphoma Research Foundation of America. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students and will be on-sale this week during all lunch blocks in the main office and commons. All money raised from the ticket sales goes to help these two organizations.

Last year, Ms. Rainoff and Ms. Lowen, two local WHS science teachers, ran a marathon to support the organization and helped to raise even more money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Research Foundation. According to a recent flyer from the organization, last year, “Our extended team of friends, family, colleagues and the students and families of Wayland High School raised $16,893.25 to help beat cancer.”

Ms. Rainoff has a personal connection to the organization because she was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma when she was in her late twenties. The disease became increasingly serious as the years went on but thanks to special treatments developed with the help of funds raised from the organizations like the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, her condition improved and she was been in remission since 1998.

This year, Ms. Lowen and Ms. Lowen will be running the 7-mile Falmouth Road Race together on August 15th to again raise money for the Lymphona Research Foundation. Ms. Rainoff will also be running in the Nation’s Triathlon in Washington D.C. on September 12th with Team in Training to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. That will be a 1 mile swim, 25 mile bike-ride and 6.2 mile run. Both the talent show and these road races help the organizations and their causes greatly.

The acts for the show include a range of styles and genres. There are louder rock bands, quieter folk acts, instrumental classical pieces, a variety of dances and also a whole slew of other performance pieces. All acts will perform in the first show and presumably the second one also. Both students and teachers will be performing in many of the same acts together so it’s a great opportunity for both groups to work with each other outside of the typical classroom setting. It’s also a great opportunity to see some of the most talented folks from the local area get together and put on a fantastic show for a good cause. Come and enjoy!

Outside donations can be made to support both Ms. Rainoff and Ms. Lowen’s race efforts in August and Ms. Rainoff’s September Triathlon race through this web page link.
