Wayland Cultural Council Announces 2010 Grant Recipients

The Wayland Cultural (WCC) is pleased to announce the recipients of this year’s Massachusetts Cultural Council grants. Each year, every city and town in Massachusetts receives money to distribute through grants to individuals or groups who submit applications proposing cultural programs that will benefit the community. The applications for funding for the next calendar year are due in mid-October.  

WCC tries to offer a variety of activities by supporting diverse cultural programs for all ages. Most of these activities are free or are offered at reduced cost to Wayland residents. Please consider exploring and/or attending these programs, but check with the organization beforehand to verify the dates.   This year, after a series of applicant interviews and Committee meetings, the WCC has given grants to the following:
 
Wild Apples, Inc. is an arts and literary publication with a focus on nature and the environment. By supporting this new magazine, the Library will get a free yearly subscription.
 
Wellesley Symphony Orchestra is a community orchestra which performs at Mass Bay Community College. A resident orchestra at the college, they applied for funds from surrounding communities this year to help defray costs for the rental of the building. Our support of this endeavor ensures this year’s continued performances of this widely attended musical program. 
 
Wayland Council on Aging (COA) The COA offered a free cross generational pastel workshop, on February 2, “How to Paint Expressively: Van Gogh’s Starry Night,” in the COA meeting room.
 
The Musicians of the Old Post Road– The Musicians of the Old Post Road presented a concert. “From the Romantic Salon,” at the First Parish of Wayland on February 5. Wayland children received free admission
 
The Wayland Public Library is offering two free craft workshops on February 6 and March 27, “Beading with Norma Radoff “ and “Bookmaking with Sue Bleiweiss:” 
 
The Shane Wood Jazz Trio, gave a free performance featuring jazz and familiar songs; probably at the Council on Aging’s annual Valentine Luncheon.
 
The Wayland Recreation Department will present “So You Thought It Was Cold at the North Pole:” a free demonstration with liquid nitrogen for children on March 26 at 6:45pm.
 
The Little Theater Concert Program presents a Classical Piano/Percussion Concert, with free admission in the Little Theater of Wayland High School on April 16 at 7pm.
 
The New England Wildflower Society at the Garden in the Woods (Sudbury) The grant will help support a “Celebration of Arbor Day,” on April 24 as part of Earth Day. Admission is free. 
 
The Concord Women’s Chorus presents “American Women of Note,” the chorus’ 50th anniversary concert, which will highlight American women composers. May 8, 7:30pm, First Parish, Concord.
 
The Wayland Wellhead Protection Committee. The grant will support the program, “The River Comes Out of Your Faucet,: Wayland’s contribution to the multi-town River Fest, which focuses on the health and viability of the Sudbury River. Wayland’s program will include live animal presentations by experienced naturalists from Drumlin Farms. June 10, location to be announced.
 
The Discovery Museum of Acton will offer “Science-Math-Arts Gals Family Night,” a free admission family evening focusing on women in the arts and sciences. Professionals, as role models and instructors, will be available for discussions. June 18, 7:45pm at the Museum.
 
The Wayland Cultural Council congratulates these recipients and looks forward to a year of exiting cultural activities. We are always interested in new members of our committee.
