Luminaria ceremony at Relay For Life

A special luminaria ceremony, held during the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of Weston-Wayland, remembers loved ones lost to cancer and honors those who have survived. A thousand luminaria bags (paper lanterns) will be lit around the Weston High School track on Saturday, May 30 at 9pm, each bearing the name or photograph of one of these individuals. Anyone desiring to make a luminaria donation may do so by contacting Ashley Abelson-James at 781-314-2608. Each luminaria bag is $10. “It is beautiful when all the bags with candles are illuminated around the track,” said Abelson-James, Relay For Life spokeswoman. “The luminaria ceremony is such a moving way to remember our loved ones lost to cancer.” Relay For Life is a fun-filled, overnight community event to fight cancer. Teams of eight to 15 members gather with tents and sleeping bags to participate in the largest fundraising event in the nation and to celebrate the lives of those who have had cancer, remember those lost, and fight back against a disease that takes too much. Relay For Life brings together friends, families, businesses, hospitals, schools, churches – people from all walks of life. Teams seek sponsorship prior to the Relay, all with the goal of eliminating cancer. Weston and Wayland cancer survivors (anyone who has ever been diagnosed with cancer) will kick off the Relay For Life on May 30 at 6pm with the official Survivors Lap. Then, the rest of the participants will join the fun. Information about making a luminaria donation, forming a team, or walking in the Survivors Lap is available by emailing Abelson-James or call her at 781-314-2608 or by visiting the Weston-Wayland Relay for Life website.
