High School Building Committee update

The recent support of Wayland voters on Election Day and at Town Meeting for funds for the Feasibility Study/Schematic Design allows the High School Building Committee (HSBC) to finalize the designer contract with HMFH Architects. It also allows the HSBC to present the designer contract and the Feasibility Study Agreement to the Wayland School Committee for approval. The HSBC expresses its gratitude to the voters of Wayland for this support.

At the HSBC meeting on April 16, the committee prepared for a meeting with the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) at which the educational specification will be backed up with program specific data, such as participation rates and number of classes. A final educational specification will be the basis for developing alternative building approaches from renovation to new construction.

Steve Millington of HMFH Architects presented a further refinement of a single phase option located in the parking areas. He also began to analyze an option with renovation to the Administration/Media Center building, the most recently built (1971) permanent structure on the Wayland High School campus.

The HSBC has directed the design team to look at four scenarios during feasibility study – a single new building with renovated Field House, a mix of renovation and new construction, two new buildings with renovated Field House, and a minimal code upgrade with minimal new classroom construction call "stop-gap."

The next meeting of the HSBC is scheduled for Thursday, April 23 at 7:30 p.m. in the School Committee conference room on the second floor of the Wayland Town Building. The community is invited to all HSBC meetings.
