School Committee Hears Superintendent’s Recommended Budget

Wayland Patch 1/7/11: School Committee Hears Superintendent’s Recommended Budget.  Recommended budget meets Finance Committee guidelines, includes new positions and avoids increases in student fees.

Wayland’s School Committee convened Thursday night to discuss Superintendent Gary Burton’s recommended FY2012 budget. It is the 17th and final budget recommendation presentation the retiring Burton will offer to the committee. The Finance Committee’s guidelines require the School Committee budget to remain flat at $31,382,713, but the Finance Committee has offered to supply $425,000 for staff increases and $75,000 for special education and student transportation costs on top of that flat budget number.

WPSF Grants Infuse Classrooms with $172,000 worth of Technology and Enrichment


Thanks to the generosity of Wayland families and local organizations, the Wayland Public Schools Foundation (WPSF) recently awarded $172,000 in grants to the Wayland Public Schools. Every year, Wayland Schools and classrooms (K-12) are the recipients of teacher grant requests geared toward enriching the core curriculum, and funding technology and cutting-edge programs that would otherwise go unfunded.   With school budgets under increasing pressure, WPSF’s grants are critically important to maintaining the tradition of excellence in Wayland classrooms.

WHS proposes condom availability for students

Wayland Student Press Network 1/4/11: WHS proposes condom availability for students | Wayland Student Press Network. In November, the Wayland High School Health Office issued a proposal to make condoms available at the school to prevent sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The issue was raised when a medical professional parent reached out to the school nurse, Amy Schoeff, to talk about why condoms were not available at WHS. After conversations with students and reviewing the 2008 Youth Behavior Survey results, Schoeff had also noticed a high rate of sexual activity and a low rate of protection against STIs in the student population. With the support of Principal Patrick Tutwiler, school guidance counselors, the Board of Health and WHS parents, the Health Office decided to take action.
