Wayland Goes … Blue?

Wayland Patch 6/5/12: Wayland Goes … Blue?. Many of Wayland's public spaces and ball fields are showing some new colors. Blue, to be exact, in the form of a new recycling bin next to the existing green trash bins. The new bins have replaced the old "buddy bins," the wire mesh containers for bottles and cans that former middle schoool teacher Pat Conaway installed and has been emptying for the past couple of years.

Wayland recreation director earns special certification

Wayland Town Crier 12/23/11: Wayland recreation director earns special certification. Recreation Director Nancy McShea recently earned the Certified Park and Recreation Executive (CPRE) certification granted by the National Certification Board in conjunction with the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA). The CPRE program recognizes advanced skills and competencies related to the practice and delivery of park and recreation programs and services. McShea is among the first ever to earn this new certification.

Metrowest Daily News 6/26/11: State budget cuts slash into summer fun. Budget cuts have forced many state and local parks and recreation programs to scale back or find creative ways to maintain services, even as advocates say more cash-strapped families are seeking cheap ways to enjoy the outdoors this summer. Since 2009, Massachusetts has closed at least seven state parks, including Ashland State Park, and swimming areas, which may face further cuts in next fiscal year's budget. Facing financial pressures of their own, towns and cities have often trimmed parks and recreation funding, turning to everything from fees to fundraising to restructuring departments to keep programs afloat. Wayland and Sudbury, for example, are approaching their second year sharing a parks and recreation director. Several towns have consolidated parks departments with public works. Arlington voters this month approved a $6.5 million override to maintain town services, which will in part stave off cuts in park maintenance and higher field-use fees.

Questions Asked, Concerns Raised at Middle School Fields Forum

Wayland Patch 5/27: Questions Asked, Concerns Raised at Middle School Fields Forum. Vernal pools, blue-spotted salamanders, runoff, noise and educational sacrifice were on the minds of the many residents who attended this week’s public hearing regarding proposed leaching and athletic fields at Wayland Middle School. Town Administrator Fred Turkington opened the forum letting attendees know that the purpose was to collect the questions and concerns of residents so that those issues could be addressed in the field analysis to be conducted soon.

Wayland boards listen to public input on use of recreation land

Wayland Town Crier 12/9/10: Wayland boards listen to public input on use of recreation land. Three town boards were represented at a well-attended public forum Tuesday night to begin what one official described as a "long-term dialogue" about the potential use of the Loker Conservation and Recreation Area. Selectmen, the Recreation Commission and Conservation Commission sponsored the forum as part of a scheduled Recreation Commission meeting.
