Wayland Town Crier 9/15/11: Committee continues to work on electronic voting at town meeting. Wayland is coming closer to adopting electronic voting for future town meetings with the recent formation of a new ELVIS (Electronic Voting Implementation Subcommittee) group. The first ELVIS group introduced electronic voting at last spring’s annual Town Meeting on a trial basis to high approval. The new group has been formed to further the implementation of the system at upcoming annual and special town meetings. It will have two major areas of responsibility. The first is to find a provider by identifying potential bidders and soliciting proposals, interviewing the bidders, and providing a recommendation to Town Administrator Fred Turkington and the Board of Selectmen. The second is to oversee the implementation and deployment of electronic voting at Town Meeting in April 2012.

Wayland Patch 8/3/11: Selectmen Discuss Permanent Electronic Voting Implementation. Electronic voting received overwhelmingly positive quantitative and qualitative feedback following its testing run at Wayland’s April Town Meeting. Monday night, the Board of Selectmen discussed the next steps toward making electronic voting a regular feature at future town meetings.

Aiming to move ahead on electronic voting

Wayland Town Crier 5/19/11: Aiming to move ahead on electronic voting. New Moderator Dennis Berry, accompanied by David Bernstein, chairman of the Electronic Voting Implementation Subcommittee (ELVIS), met with the Board of Selectmen on Monday night to discuss electronic voting, which was introduced on an experimental basis at annual Town Meeting last month. Both men said that, according to feedback received from residents, electronic voting was a rousing success.

Electronic voting and the proposed $71 million town budget for fiscal 2011, which runs from July 2011 to June 2012, both made it through the first session of Wayland’s annual Town Meeting on Thursday night, the former swimmingly, the latter after several hours of spirited debate.

Residents turn down two other proposals for town meeting

Wayland Town Crier 5/26/10: Residents turn down two other proposals for town meeting. The vote to implement electronic voting was successful, but two other proposed changes to Wayland town meeting did not pass on Wednesday night. Resident Mark Greenlaw proposed moving the most important town meeting articles to a ballot vote in order to increase voter participation, a proposal that was defeated 167-90. Besides the "Australian ballot," Town Meeting voters also turned down the chance to post a link to the private website WaylandDebates.org on the town of Wayland’s website. The Electronic Voting proposal was amended to be a free trial, and it passed on a voice vote.

Town Meeting voters will be counting on change

Wayland Town Crier 5/22/10: Town Meeting voters will be counting on change. Wayland will take old-style Town Meeting into the modern age next year with the addition of electronic keypads for voters. Former selectman Alan Reiss introduced the proposal at the final night of annual Town Meeting on Wednesday, saying it will help alleviate the grumbling generated by contentious votes at recent town meetings.

Wayland Town Crier 3/24/10: Westwood considering electronic voting at town meeting. Supporters of electronic voting at town meeting in Wayland have received a boost recently with the discovery that the nearby municipality of Westwood is also considering adopting the technology. According to Westwood Town Administrator Michael Gillette, "We’re not absolutely certain about this yet, but we’d certainly like to explore the option."
