Craft Your Kindness

The club at Wayland High School, Make Our Schools Safe is a part of the Invent2Prevent program. Invent2Prevent is an innovative and experiential learning program that challenges high schools across the country to implement and create a project that targets acts of targeted violence, hate, or terrorism in their specific communities. The Wayland High School chapter of I2P did extensive research and decided to create a project that involved the youth of their community. Elementary teachers identified bullying and social isolation as common problems with their students. The group decided to combat these issues with art. Art gives kids a safe space to express their vulnerable feelings, and it was a project that allowed everyone the ability to participate. The name of our project was Craft Your Kindness. It was a project with the prompt “What does kindness mean to me?” To implement this in the Wayland community, the group presented the project at the elementary school assemblies and handed out the sheets of paper to the students. The group wanted there to be an interactive part of this project, so they dropped in during BASE (the after school program) while the kids were doing their art work to talk to them about feelings.
