ADULT SERVICES

  • Virtual Author Talk: John Irving and The Last Chairlift. An international bestseller since The World According to Garp in 1978, Irving has declared his latest to be his final long novel.  He’ll discuss not only that book but the others that have come out of a lifetime of writing.  Register.  Thursday, October 26 at 7 p.m.
  • Virtual Author Talk: Anders Gyllenhaal and A Wing and a Prayer. With his co-author and wife, Beverly, Gyllenhaal reports on what’s being done to save birds in the midst of dramatic downturns in North American populations.  Their presentation draws on their 25,000 miles of travel across the hemisphere researching the book, and interviews with 300 people in every station in the world of birds.  Register.  Monday, October 30 at 7 p.m.
  • Virtual Author Talk: John Stamos and If You Would Have Told Me. Full House star, John Stamos, will lead us through his incredibly moving and vulnerable memoir.  Whether showing off his comedic chops on Full House or his dramatic skills on ER, pushing the boundaries on Broadway or living out his youthful dreams as an honorary Beach Boy, John has surprised everyone, most of all himself.  Register.  Wednesday, November 1 at 8 p.m.
  • Author Talk: Tammy Donroe Inman and New England Desserts. Since the very first taste of maple syrup, New England’s native plants and fresh dairy products have been used over the past four centuries to create desserts for the nation.  Earning her chops in the test kitchen of Cook’s Illustrated and behind the scenes of the television show America’s Test Kitchen, New England native and trained chef Tammy Donroe Inman has spent nearly 20 years writing about food.  Register.  Thursday, November 2 at 8 p.m.
  • Author Talk: Kathryn Crawley and Walking on Fire. Greece, 1974.  A young American, reeling from a failed marriage, takes a job teaching disabled children.  The more she learns about this nation awakening from a long dictatorship, the more she questions her conservative Texas upbringing.  When the politics of her new lover threaten her safety, she’s faced with life-altering choices.  Kathryn Crawley worked at The Children’s Way in Wayland for 20 years and lives in Belmont.  In person and online.  Register.  Round Room, Saturday, November 4 at 3 p.m.

YOUTH SERVICES

PUMPKIN DECORATING CONTEST. Kids and Teens are invited to participate in our annual Pumpkin Decorating Contest! Register for a library pumpkin or use your own to compete for Best Decorated or Best Carved in your age group. Contestants will submit pictures of their creations by 10/23, then voting will take place online. Pumpkins generously donated by Stop and Shop. Click HERE for more details.

FOR BABIES, TODDLERS AND PRESCHOOLERS

  • Baby & Toddler Storytime with Ms. Carly. This storytime encourages early literacy and caregiver-child interactions with lively songs and rhymes, bounces, books, and body-awareness. Best for babies and toddlers, with caregiver. Weather permitting, we will meet outdoors on the green lawn. Please register. Tuesdays, October 24, and October 31, November 7, November 14, November 21, and November 28 at 10:30 a.m.
  • Storytime with Ms. Pam. Join Ms. Pam for stories, songs, puppets, and activities. For ages 2.5 to 5 years with an adult. We will meet in the Children’s Room. Please register. Thursdays, October 26, November 2, November 16, and November 30 at 10:30 a.m.
  • Music, Story, Fun! with Ms. Janet. Join Ms. Janet for a musical storytime. She’ll bring her ukulele, rainbow bells, and puppets! We will meet in the Children’s Room. For ages birth through age 4, with caregivers. Please register HERE. Friday, October 27, at 10:30 a.m.
  • Storytime with Obie the Dog. Children will listen to dog stories and have a chance to visit with Obie, a beautiful Samoyed. Obie will be accompanied by his owner Helen. For ages 3 and up, with an adult. Please register HERE. Thursday, November 9, at 10:30 a.m.

FOR ELEMENTARY AGE CHILDREN

  • Fall Shapes Mobile with Ms. Elise. Join Ms. Elise to make a beautiful fall mobile! Children will choose from leaves, apples, or pumpkin cut-out shapes, decorate them with paint, watercolors and tissue paper, and suspend the decorated shapes from a wooden branch. For ages 5 and up, with caregiver. Weather permitting, we will meet outside. Please register HERE. Wednesday, October 25, at 3:30 p.m.
  • Pokemon Card Trading Day. Kids are invited to a Pokemon card trading day at the library. Come with cards you are willing to trade! For ages 7 to 11. Please register HERE. Thursday, October 26, at 4:00 p.m.
  • Lego Club. Children will make fabulous creations out of legos. This month’s theme is Robots! We will meet in the Raytheon Room. For ages 5 and up, with caregivers. Please register HERE. Wednesday, November 1, at 3:30 p.m.
  • Monarchs and Milkweed. Children will learn about the importance of native plants, and will plant milkweed seeds in small containers, to replant in their gardens at home. WHS student Tara Sawrikar will lead this program, as a part of her Girl Scout Gold Award project. For children ages 6 and up. Please register HERE. Wednesday, November 8, at 4:00 p.m.
  • 3D Design Workshop: Sliding Box. In this 3D design program, participants will design their own working sliding lid box.  Using Tinkercad.com, participants will assign specific dimensions to create a functional object.  Some experience with Tinkercad is recommended, but not required.  Objects will be printed after the workshop, and will be free.  Ages 8 and up, adults and parents also welcome.  Children younger than 8 are welcome, but parents are encouraged to stay and design with their children.  Registration required. FOR TEENS

Teen Crafternoon: Felted Sloth. Teens! Please join us and make an adorable felted slot. Learn how to sculpt a sloth using a special needle and merino wool. Needle felting is fun and easier than it looks. This program will be presented by Pop Up Art School. For teens ages 12 and up. Registration required. Please register HERE.
