  • Virtual Author Talk: Beer Hiking New England with Carey Kish. A seasoned hiker and beer enthusiast, Carey Kish traveled over 300 miles on foot and tasted more than 230 different beers to bring readers this great selection of hikes and brews.  Carey will talk about the stunning scenery that awaits you, and the breweries and brewpubs nearby that’ll quench your thirst at hike’s end.  Presented in collaboration with the Lincoln Public Library and others.  Register.  Monday, June 5 at 7 p.m.
  • Planning a Garden and Cooking with Herbs. In this interactive program, Wayland resident ​Cindi Jacobs shares her expertise in planning and maintaining an herb garden. Then, Holli Bassin offers tips for cooking with herbs and the important role herbs can play in your health.  Cindi designs interior home spaces and is an avid gardener.  Holli teaches interactive workshops on nutrition, stress management, and lifestyle topics.  In person and virtual.  Register.  Tuesday, June 6 at 7 p.m.
  • Virtual Author Talk: The Fun Habit with Mike Rucker, Ph.D. Doesn’t it seem that the more we seek happiness, the more elusive it becomes?  Through research and science, we know that fun is enormously beneficial to our physical and psychological well-being, yet fun’s absence from our modern lives is striking.  The Fun Habit: How the Disciplined Pursuit of Joy and Wonder Can Change Your Life is the ultimate guide to reap the serious benefits fun offers.  Register.  Wednesday, June 7 at 4 p.m.
  • George Tooker: Modern Life and Magical Realism. Tooker’s art conjured powerful scenes of both quiet beauty and the tensions of contemporary living.  Art historian Jane Oneail examines the life and remarkable work of this boundary-breaking artist.  Hosted by the Maynard Public library in partnership with the Wayland and Lincoln Public Libraries.  Virtual only.  Register.  Monday, June 12 at 7 p.m.
  • Virtual Author Talk: An American in Provence with Jamie Beck. Looking to slow down from her fast-paced life in New York City, New York Times-bestselling author and award-winning photographer Jamie Beck embarked on a one-year getaway to Provence.  As one year turned into five, Beck documented her life in this combination of art book, travel diary, memoir, and cookbook.  Register.  Thursday, June 15 at 2 p.m.
  • Sarah Wight Exhibit. Sarah Wight (1822-1878) was the daughter of Rev. John Burt Wight, Wayland state legislator and one of the founders of the Wayland Library.  At twenty-three years old, she became the teacher of Laura Bridgman, the most famous deaf-blind person in America before Helen Keller.  Wight is the subject of a fascinating exhibit in the vitrine on the main floor.
  • A Wealth of Information. Did you know that the Library has a database that covers articles and information about the hospitality industry?  Or one on criminal justice?  How about environmental studies, sports medicine, culinary arts, gardening and horticulture, or home improvement?  There’s even a collection of legal forms, not to mention all the financial, literary, and news offerings.  Our Online Resources page is a vast trove of information riches.  Explore!

YOUTH SERVICES

SUMMER READING. Our 2023 Summer Reading Program Find Your Voice kicks off on June 15 with an outdoor magic show by Mike Bent. Other programming highlights include Circus Minimus, live animals with Joy from Joys of Nature, and a performance by the Toe Jam Puppet Band, as well as many fun craft and STEM challenges. Starting on June 12, kids can track their reading online or on paper logs to earn raffle tickets for prizes. Every child who registers can pick up a goody bag at the library!

The Teen Summer Reading Program also starts on June 12. Programming highlights for teens include making pride stickers, a beading workshop, and a Switch Tournament. Teens can also track their reading to earn raffle tickets for prizes.

FOR BABIES, TODDLERS AND PRESCHOOLERS 

  • Outdoor Baby & Toddler Storytime with Ms. Carly. This storytime encourages early literacy and caregiver-child interactions with lively songs and rhymes, bounces, books, and body-awareness. Best for babies and toddlers, with caregiver. Weather permitting, we will meet outdoors on the green lawn. Tuesdays,  June 6. June 13, June 20 and June 27 at 10:30 a.m.
  • Outdoor Storytime with Ms. Pam. Join Ms. Pam for stories, songs, puppets, and activities. For ages 2.5 to 5 years with an adult. Please register. We will meet in the Children’s Room. Thursdays, June 22, and June 29 at 10:30 a.m.

FOR ELEMENTARY AGE CHILDREN

  • Lego Club. Children will make fabulous creations out of Legos. This month’s theme: Ships and Boats. We will meet in the Raytheon Room. For ages 5 and up, with caregivers. Please register HERE. Wednesday, June 7, at 3:30 p.m.
  • Pokemon Card Trading Day. Kids are invited to a Pokemon card trading day at the library. Come with cards you are willing to trade! We will meet outdoors on the green lawn, weather permitting. For ages 7 to 11. Please register HERE. Wednesday, June 14, at 4 p.m.
  • Summer Reading Kickoff: Magician Mike Bent. Local magician Mike Bent will amaze and delight children with his magic tricks. This event kicks off our Summer Reading Program Find Your Voice. Weather permitting, we will meet outside on the green lawn. For ages 3 and up, with caregiver. Please register HERE. Thursday, June 15, at 3:30 p.m.
  • Make Your Own Story Cubes. Come create a storytelling game! Kids will draw a set of story cubes featuring their own unique designs and ideas. Then we will show you how to use your cubes to play a storytelling game by yourself or with friends. For ages 4 and up, with caregiver. Please register HERE. Thursday, June 20, at 3:30 p.m.
  • Circus Minimus: One-Man Circus-in-a-Suitcase. This show gives everyone an opportunity to participate in an enthralling, whimsical celebration of the imagination. At Hannah Williams Playground, 71 Main Street, Wayland. Please register HERE. Wednesday, June 21, at 4:00 p.m.
  • Build It! Cardboard Robots. If you could build a robot helper for this summer, what would it do? Bring your imaginations to build models of your summer robot using cardboard and recyclables. For ages 4 and up, with caregiver. Please register HERE. Tuesday, June 27, at 3:30 p.m.
  • Buildwave: Hands-on Building Game. In this hands-on building game, kids will create with over a dozen different building materials. The program is run by educators at Buildwave. For children ages 5 and up, with caregivers. Registration required. Please register HERE. Wednesday, June 28, at 3:00 p.m.
  • Origami for Kids. Children will learn simple and intermediate origami in this workshop led by Fenn school student Lucas Li. For children ages 6 and up. Children under 9 must be accompanied by an adult. Please register HERE. Thursday, June 29, at 4:30 p.m.

FOR TEENS

  • Henna Workshop for Teens. Henna, more traditionally referred to as Mehendi art, is a temporary tattoo art form consisting of intricate motifs that adorn hands and feet. This workshop will take an unconventional approach to the ancient art form. Teens will begin by getting familiar with the henna cone, and then draw patterns, such as flowers, leaves, and vines, on a canvas. Teens are also, of course, welcome to draw on their own hands. All materials will be provided. Local teen Niyathi Srinivasan from Henna for Humanity will lead this workshop. For teens in grades 6 and up. Please register HERE. Thursday, June 8, 4:00-6:00 p.m.
  • Create a Fantasy Map. Teens will learn how to easily create a fantasy map using dried rice and pasta. We’ll have some of the best YA fantasy book maps on hand for inspiration as well as creative prompts to help build a unique world. For teens in grades 6 and up. Please register HERE.   • DIY Pride Stickers. Make your own stickers from scratch to celebrate LGBTQIA+ Pride Month! Use our premade images or create your own hand drawn designs. For teens in grades 6 and up. Please register HERE. Thursday, June 29, at 4:00 p.m.
