ADULT SERVICES

  • Singing Frogs with the Mass Audubon. Frogs can be a strong indicator of environmental health.  Learn the different frogs found in Massachusetts, as well as how to identify them by their calls, and about “Frogwatch,” a community science project.  Led by Alex Dohan of Mass Audubon.  Hosted by the Tewksbury Public Library, in partnership with the WFPL and others.  Register for the Zoom link.  Thursday, May 18 at 2 p.m.
  • Author Talk: Kwan Kew Lai and The Girl Who Taught Herself to FlyIn her poignant, harrowing memoir, Dr. Lai recalls her impoverished childhood in Malaysia as one of twelve siblings, and her determination to better herself beyond what life seemed to allow.  In person and online.  Register.  Thursday, May 18 at 7 p.m.
  • Gardening Book Sale. The Friends of the Wayland Library will hold a pop-up gardening book sale at the Wayland Garden Club’s Plant Sale at the Town Building.  Donate your gardening books on the first floor of the library until the day before the sale.  Saturday, May 20, 9-12 p.m.
  • Fix It First: Jeans. Bring a pair of jeans and learn how to alter, mend, and customize them instead of getting rid of them.  Cambridge School of Weston students will show how to shorten hems; lengthen pockets; take in sides, legs and waist; and fray and apply patches. They’ll also share what they’ve learned about the effects of fast fashion and why “Fix It First” mentality is so important.  Register.  Saturday, May 20 at 11 a.m.
  • Virtual Author Talk: Courtney Summers and I’m the Girl  Following Sadie, Courtney Summers’s 2018 breakout hit, I’m the Girl is a masterfully written, bold, and unflinching thriller about a young woman struggling to navigate a deadly and predatory power structure.  Summers is the bestselling and critically acclaimed author of several novels for young adults.  Register.  Saturday, May 20 at 2 p.m.
  • The Fascinating Life of Gertrude Bell. She was able to ride a camel as well as any Bedouin trader. She spoke 7 languages fluently. She was a skilled archaeologist, cartographer, linguist, photographer and diplomat. Bob Begin recounts the story of the dauntless Gertrude Bell, a woman who defied the limitations of her time.  In person and online.  Register.  Tuesday, May 23 at 7 p.m.
  • Indelible History at the American Heritage Museum. A compelling survey of America’s military history by Hunter Chaney of the AHM in Hudson.  Museum visitors explore America’s conflicts, from the Revolution to today, and interact with history, learning about the development of new technologies of warfare, and the impact of military conflict on humanity.  In person and online.  Register.  Thursday, May 25 at 7 p.m.

YOUTH SERVICES

FOR BABIES, TODDLERS AND PRESCHOOLERS

  • Outdoor Baby & Toddler Storytime with Ms. Carly. This storytime encourages early literacy and caregiver-child interactions with lively songs and rhymes, bounces, books, and body-awareness. Best for babies and toddlers, with caregiver. Weather permitting, we will meet outdoors on the green lawn. Tuesdays,  May 16, May 23, and May 30 at 10:30 a.m.
  • Storytime with Ms. Pam. Join Ms. Pam for stories, songs, puppets, and activities. For ages 2.5 to 5 years with an adult. Please register. We will meet in the Children’s Room. Thursday, May 18,  at 10:30 a.m.
  • Early Childhood Fair with Tom Knight’s Musical Puppets. Learn about the early childhood resources available for Wayland families with young children! Local preschools, the Wayland Library, Family ACCESS Community Connections, WCPA, Park and Rec, and WIC will host tables. Tom Knight and his Musical puppets will perform at 11:00 am. This event takes place at the Hannah Williams Playground, 71 Main Street, Wayland. Saturday, May 20, 10am to 12 pm. Overflow parking is at Cochituate Ball Field and the Town Beach (both walking distance). Rain date is Sunday, May 21.
  • Storytime with Obie the Dog. Children will listen to dog stories and have a chance to visit with Obie, a beautiful Samoyed. Obie will be accompanied by his owner Helen. We will meet in the Raytheon Room. For ages 3 and up, with an adult. Please register HERE. Thursday, May 25, at 10:30 am.

FOR ELEMENTARY AGE CHILDREN. 

  • Pokemon Card Trading Day. Kids are invited to a Pokemon card trading day at the library. Come with cards you are willing to trade! We will meet outdoors on the green lawn, weather permitting. For ages 7 to 11. Please register HERE. Wednesday, May 17, at 4 p.m.
  • Yarn Butterfly Craft. Celebrate springtime and make a beautiful yarn butterfly using simple craft materials. For ages 4 and up, with caregiver. Please register HERE. Wednesday, May 24, at 3:30 p.m.
  • Build It! Tower Challenge. Children will build towers with different materials at different challenge stations. Bring your imagination and be ready for all kinds of towers! For ages 4 and up with caregiver. Please register HERE. Wednesday, May 31, at 3:30 p.m.

FOR TEENS

  • Teen Crafternoon: Paper Flowers. Stop by the Teen Loft and create paper flowers using various techniques. For teens in grades 6 and up. Please register HERE. Thursday, May 18, at 4:00 p.m.
  • Magic the Gathering for Teens. Teens! Play Magic the Gathering with your friends! Bring your own Magic Cards or use ours. Experienced players and newbies welcome. For teens in grades 6 and up. We will meet in the Teen Loft. Please register. Friday, May 26 at 4:30 p.m.
