Film about Russell’s Garden Center wins “Best Documentary Award” at the BOSTON INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

The film, “Growing Through Covid-19” made its big screen, theatrical debut at AMC Theatres Boston on Monday April 17th and won the “Best Documentary Award”. This feature film shows the struggle of a small business and the healing power of gardening. Filmed in real time during the 2020 pandemic the mother-daughter, Producer-Director team was able to capture an unscripted documentary then create a professional film in a Cinema Verité style. What resulted was a compelling uplifting story about how 144-year-old, Russell’s Garden Center almost went out of business when they closed for Covid during the Spring of 2020. Once they re-opened, the movie captures their family, employees and customers rallying around them as they discover that gardening and growing plants brought them happiness during the pandemic’s darkest hours. The beautiful shots of flowers and plants and the original music score composed specifically for the film gained praise and appreciation from viewers. Out of 5,500 submissions, the Boston International Film Festival chose just under 50 short films and only 14 feature films. “Growing Through Covid-19″ was one of the 14 features. While Director, Genevieve Skehan works in the Boston Film industry and Producer, Elizabeth Russell-Skehan has gardening, advertising and marketing experience, this is their first feature film together. With films from all over the world, the Boston International Film Festival honored “Growing Through Covid-19” with the “Top Documentary Film Award”.
