Domestic Violence Roundtable’s White Ribbon Group to Hold Event on Fathers’ Roles

The White Ribbon Group of the Sudbury-Wayland-Lincoln Domestic Violence Roundtable and REACH Beyond Domestic Violence present “Watching Dad: What We Learn from Our Fathers about being Parents and Partners” on Monday, March 20, at 7 p.m.

The event will be held in the Community Meeting Room at the Goodnow Library, 21 Concord Road, Sudbury. David Adams, co-founder and co-director of abuser education program Emerge, will be the featured speaker

“In the 1970s, David Adams developed the first counseling program in the nation for men who have been abusive to women,” said Colm McGarry, chairman of the White Ribbon Group. “He continues his work locally and his thoughts about the role our fathers play in influencing attitudes and behaviors are worth our attention.”

The event is inspired by the White Ribbon Campaign, which is the world’s largest movement of men and boys working to end violence against women and girls, and promote gender equity, healthy relationships and a new vision of masculinity.

It follows the White Ribbon Group’s virtual events in March 2022, “Transforming the Culture of ‘Power Over’: Compassionate Accountability,” and March 2021, “A Call to Families: Discussing Healthy Masculinity with Young People.” “Watching Dad” will be the White Ribbon Group’s first major in-person event.

“We’re excited to offer what will surely be a thought-provoking conversation about an extremely important issue,” said Paul Crocetti, president of the Domestic Violence Roundtable and a member of the White Ribbon Group. “Unfortunately, domestic violence happens every day. It happens in our community. And men need to recognize our role in ending domestic violence.”

While the Domestic Violence Roundtable had planned awareness events about the White Ribbon movement for years, the local men’s group formed in 2019. The group of men meets monthly and aims to encourage healthy and positive attitudes and behaviors, and to create an environment free of fear and violence by advancing equity, justice and dignity.
