First Parish in Wayland: A Ceremony of Carols

Please join us on Dec. 11 at 10 a.m. for a special Music Sunday service. Enjoy Benjamin Britten’s joyful Ceremony of Carols, presented by the First Parish Choir
and virtuoso harpist Juli Miller, under the baton of Music Director Polly Oliver. Rev. Dr. Stephanie May will deliver a homily titled “Wolcum,” an Early English word that translates to “welcome” in today’s English. As we enjoy the music of carols sung in Latin as well as Early and Middle English, how does the music and the season transcend one language and one time?

Britten wrote A Ceremony of Carols some 80 years ago while crossing U-boat-infested waters during a one-month sail from America to Great Britain. Inspired sequencing and a subtle genius for building a musical framework for the choral texts makes Ceremony one of the holiday season’s enduring classics.
