Wayland Fire Department Invites Community to Open House in Recognition of National Fire Prevention Week

Chief Neil McPherson wishes to invite the community to an open house at the Wayland Fire Department this weekend in recognition of National Fire Prevention Week.

Saturday, Oct. 15, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Wayland Fire Department, 38 Cochituate Road

In celebration and recognition of the 100th year of Fire Prevention Week, the Wayland Fire Department is hosting an open house featuring family activities and demonstrations.

Fire Prevention Week, recognized Oct. 9-15 this year, is organized by the National Fire Protection Association with the goal of educating the public about simple but important ways they can keep themselves and those they live with safe. This year’s theme, “Fire won’t wait. Plan your escape,” aims to get everyone to make a fire escape plan with their families, and to begin their preparations by ensuring their home has working smoke alarms that will properly alert in the event of a fire.

At the event, community members will learn about fire prevention, view informational videos and have a chance to connect with members of the Wayland Fire Department.

Attendees also will have a chance to participate in a simulation designed to replicate putting out a fire with a fire extinguisher.

The event also will feature face painting, trucks on display, food and refreshments. A special guest appearance will be made by Sparky the Fire Dog.

The Wayland Council on Aging will be present to hand out important information for seniors.

“Each year, our department looks forward to hosting this Open House,” Chief McPherson said. “It is a great way to connect with community members of all ages and share valuable fire safety information, all while having fun. We encourage community members to stop by for a visit on Saturday.”
