ADULT SERVICES

  • Great Presenters: Building a New Home from the Old. Writer, visual artist, and humanitarian Richard Lee presents the story of his family’s immigration and adjustment to the U. S. in 1975, in hopes that other people, whatever their histories, might see their own experiences mirrored.  Register for online or in-person attendance.  Tuesday, October 11 at 7:30 p.m.
  • ONE Read Discussion Group. Join librarian Courtney Michael to discuss Thank You, Mr. Nixon by Gish Jen, a collection of eleven linked short stories that “take measure of the fifty years since the opening of China and its unexpected effects on the lives of ordinary people.”  Wednesday, October 12 at 7 p.m. via Zoom.
  • Author Talk: Not NiceBeing too nice can make it hard to speak up, say “no,” or do something that might upset someone.  This talk will teach participants that the opposite of nice is not mean but real.  You’ll learn how to say “no” when you want and need to, confidently ask for what you want, and eliminate feelings of guilt, anxiety, and worry about what others will think.  Dr. Aziz Gazipura is a clinical psychologist and one of the world’s leading experts on social confidence.  Register.  Thursday, October 13 at 4 p.m. via Zoom
  • Haunted Lighthouses of New England. Lighthouses and ghost stories often seem to go hand in hand.  This presentation will focus on some of the macabre tales of New England’s coastal beacons, including the lovelorn spirit known as Ernie at Connecticut’s New London Ledge Light and the piano-playing ghost of Maine’s Seguin Light.  President of the American Lighthouse Association, presenter Jeremy D’Entremont is the author of more than 20 books on maritime history and lighthouses, and has appeared on the History Channel, Public Television, and National Public Radio.  Register.  Monday, October 17 at 7 p.m. via Zoom.
  • Author Talk: Where the Children Take Us. In her inspiring memoir, popular CNN anchor Zain E. Asher tells the story of how her mother fought poverty and prejudice as a widowed immigrant in South London to raise four successful children.  In addition to anchoring the global news program One World, Asher hosts Marketplace Africa, CNN International’s weekly business show about the continent and its place within global markets.  Register.  Tuesday, October 18 at 7 p.m. via Zoom.
  • Author Talk: Lethal Tides. Hidden Figures meets The Imitation Game in this phenomenal true story of the virtually unknown Mary Sears.  A Wayland native known as “the first oceanographer of the Navy,” she led a team of scientists whose groundbreaking oceanographic research helped lead the U.S. to victory in the Pacific theater during World War II.  Author Catherine Musemeche holds degrees in medicine and law.  Register.  Sunday, October 23 at 2:30 p.m. via Zoom.
  • ESOL Tutors Needed. It doesn’t matter if you don’t speak a foreign language or have never taught before.  Once you complete the Library-sponsored training course, you’re ready for what could be a wonderfully rewarding relationship.  The course for this fall will be through Zoom from 6-9 p.m. on five consecutive Wednesdays, starting October 12.  The course is free but does require a $40 textbook.  For more information or to enroll, contact Ginny Steel at 508-358-7517 or virginia@thesteels.com.
