• Author Talk: Headed Into the Abyss. Join architect and social critic Brian Watson to discuss his new book, Headed into the Abyss: The Story of Our Time, and the Future We’ll Face, which analyzes how ten different forces – capitalism, technology, the internet, politics, media, education, human nature, the environment, population, and transportation – are driving and shaping society, all within the context of the complexities of communication via the Internet.  Place a copy on hold, and register through our Events menu.  Tuesday, July 26 at 7 p.m.
• Minuteman Library Crawl. See what local libraries have to offer you and your family in this fun scavenger hunt.  Visit as many participating libraries as you can and take a picture of yourself with a designated item in each library.  Post your pics and tag the libraries #mlncrawl2022.  Show your pictures to a librarian (or if you don’t have a camera, just tell a librarian you’re on the crawl–we’re pretty trusting) and receive a prize!  See our Events menu for more information.  Wednesday, August 3, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
• Author Talk: The Golden Arches in Black America. McDonald’s has often been blamed for the rising rates of obesity and diabetes among black Americans. In her 2021 Pulitzer-Prizewinning Franchise: The Golden Arches in Black America, Dr. Marcia Chatelain uncovers a surprising history of cooperation among fast-food companies, black capitalists, and civil rights leaders, who–in the troubled years after King’s assassination–believed they had found an economic answer to the problem of racial inequality.  Dr. Chatelain is a Professor of History and African American Studies at Georgetown University.  Register through our Events menu.  Wednesday, August 3 at 2 p.m.
• Help Us Prepare for Our 175^th Anniversary. Founded in 1848, the Wayland Free Public Library is one of the oldest public libraries in the United States. To commemorate our 175th anniversary in March 2023, we’re working with three Brandeis Ph.D. students to investigate our history. We’ll present our findings through an interactive website, a printed pamphlet, and an in-person celebration at the library. We’re looking for library patrons to participate in a focus group for the WFPL anniversary event.  We’d like to know what patrons think of WFPL as a community space so we can bring our history into the 21st century.  The focus group will be meet in the Raytheon Room and on Zoom, and is open to anyone who is interested in joining.  Register here.  Wednesday, August 3 from 7:00-8:30 p.m.
• New Way to Learn a Language. The Library now offers a terrific new learning tool called Transparent Language Online.  It provides an effective and engaging experience for language learners looking to build their vocabulary, practice their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, and maintain what they learn.  With courses and supplemental resources in 110+ languages (including English), Transparent Language Online can be accessed anytime, anywhere, on almost any device.  Look for it under the Online Resources menu on our home page.
• Magazine Survey. Please use the brief survey on our website to tell us how you use our magazine collection and what you’d like to see in it.  Thanks!
• History-Minded?  Write Neatly? We’re looking for a short-term volunteer to help get the historical collection in order.  Must pay attention to detail, handle materials carefully, and have good handwriting.  One hour a week for four to eight weeks.  High school students welcome.  Only one volunteer needed at this time.  Please contact M. SUMMER READING. Our 2022 Summer Reading Program Camp iRead: Read Beyond the Beaten Path is going strong! Programming highlights include a concert by the Toe Jam Puppet Band. Kids in grades preK through grade 5 will keep track of their reading online or on paper logs and will earn badges for time reading and for attending programs. Every child who registers can pick up a goody bag at the library. Participants will also earn raffle tickets for prizes! Our Teen Reading Program has also started.  Teens can participate in camp-themed programs at the library and read to earn gift packs and gift card prizes. • Outdoor Storytimes with Ms. Carly. Join Ms. Carly outdoors for storytime! Children and their caregivers will listen to stories, sing songs, and perform fun rhymes and movements. We will meet on the lawn behind the library. In the case of inclement weather we will hold the storytime in the Children’s Room. • Campfire Song Singalong with Julie Stepanek. Learn (or re-learn) campfire songs with Julie Stepanek! She will sing Heigh Ho, Black Socks, On Top Of Spaghetti, The Other Day I Met a Bear, and more! • Author Visit: Alec Carvlin presents How to Bake A Universe. Calling all cosmic chefs! Alec Carvlin will read his debut picture book, How to Bake a Universe. Kids will love decorating their own cosmic sunglasses, hearing the book read aloud by the author, and asking questions about the fun and funky science in the story. • Camping on the Moon. What would you need for a camping trip on the moon? Learn about the 1969 Moon Landing and make a moon diorama and a balloon rocket launcher. SEEKING VOLUNTEER CODING TEACHERS. The Wayland Library Girls Who Code Club is looking for volunteer facilitators for the 2022-2023 academic year. Affiliated with the national Girls Who Code organization (girlswhocode.com) and its mission of closing the gender gap in technology, the Wayland club brings together girls for hands-on learning about code and technology. Enthusiasm for working with the girls is required; technical skill is helpful but not necessary, especially if you are willing to learn along with them.
