ADULT SERVICES

  • Wayland Reads Author Talk: Against Civility. According to author Alex Zamalin, the idea of civility has always been wielded to silence dissent, repress political participation, and justify violence upon people of color. Although many progressives today are urged to be more polite and thoughtful, citizens who care deeply about racial and socioeconomic equality need to abandon this concept of discreet politeness and instead more fully support disruptive actions and calls for liberation.  The author of several other books, Zamalin is the director of the African American Studies Program and Assistant Professor of political science at the University of Detroit Mercy.  Register through our Events menu.  Sunday, April 11 at 3 p.m.
  • Medicinal Herb Gardening: What to Grow. The right herbal “superstars” can treat common ailments like colds and flu, inflammation, minor cuts, muscle spasms, poor digestion, and many more.  But how do you even start a medicinal herb garden?  Ehris Urban and Velya Jancz-Urban, the “green witches” of the Grounded Goodwife website, will get you started on the path to natural wellness through herbs you grow yourself.  Register through our Events menu.  Monday, April 5 at 7 p.m.
  • Exploring a Human Rights Commission. Join us to understand what human rights commissions (HRC) are and how they foster a safe, welcoming community.  Given efforts are underway to create a municipal HRC in Wayland, Professor Martha Davis of Northeastern University’s School of Law, will share the merits of human rights commissions, what they do, and how they function effectively.  Register through our Events menu.  Tuesday, April 13 at 7 p.m.
  • Noon Book Group. The title up for discussion is Richard Hughes’s unsettling, dreamlike tale of children and pirates, A High Wind in Jamaica.  Contact amoore@minlib.net for a copy of the book and the Zoom link.  Friday, April 9.
  • Dystopian/Sci-Fi Book Group. A time traveler stranded in the past has some hard choices to make when rescue arrives from the future in Mike Chen’s Here and Now and Then.  Contact ekatz@minlib.net for the Zoom link.  Thursday, April 22 at 7 p.m.
  • Big Return on Investment. In January, we circulated $232,393 worth of materials.  Our materials budget for the entire year is just $195,000.  Pretty darn good value for your tax dollar, if we say so ourselves.
  • Why Are Things I Returned Still On My Card? Because we quarantine everything for three days before we check it in.  And if you returned them over the weekend, that could add a day.  But never fear—we’ll waive any late fees generated by the delayed check-in.
