News and Updates from the Wayland Library, September 26, 2020

ADULT SERVICES

  • Archaeology West of Boston. Native Americans have lived in southern New England for 10,000 years or more.  Tonya Largy, a Wayland resident and archaeological consultant, will discuss how archaeologists learn about ancient peoples from several lines of evidence, including stone tools, ceramics, and the remains of animals and plants found during excavations; and how dates are obtained from these materials. She’ll describe several archaeological projects carried out in Metrowest communities, and have some artifacts excavated in Wayland on hand.  Register here or through the Events menu on our home page.  Wednesday, October 14 at 7 p.m.
  • Learners and Tutors Wanted for Wayland ESOL. The ESOL program of the Wayland Public Library continues during the pandemic as tutors “meet” with their learners via FaceTime, Skype, Zoom, or simply by telephone and email.  If you know of a possible learner, please have them contact Ginny Steel (781-541-4919 or virginia@thesteels.com) or Jane Albert (617-872-2714 or jane-esol@cohen-family.org).  If you are interested in becoming a tutor, the next training class will be on Zoom, from 6-9 pm on Wednesday October 7, 14, 21 and 28 and November 4.  Contact Ginny Steele for more information.

  • Social Justice Book Group. This is a new group that will meet via Zoom on the third Thursday of each month.  No long-term commitment required.  Ages 16+.  This month, the group will discuss Our Time is Now by Stacey Abrams.  Call the library for a print copy, or reserve it in ebook, e-audiobook, or CD format.  Register here or through the Events menu on our home page.  Thursday, October 15 at 7 p.m.
  • Big Book Drops Open Again. Which means you can return stuff in the dead of night, just the way you like (we all have our quirks).  The small media drop box will remain closed, so just put everything in the big one—except for museum passes.  You still need to call us when you’re bringing those back.

FOR PARENTS

  • Parenting for Social Justice through Co-Constructive, Race-Conscious Reading. Join Megan Dowd Lambert and Autumn Allen for an online presentation and discussion about reading picture books with children through a race-conscious lens. In this interactive session, our guests will share their expertise on 1) how to guide children to and through picture books with positive racial representations; and 2) how to support children in resisting or reading against problematic, racist content.   • Singalong on Zoom with Jeannie Mack: Stories, Songs, and Sign. Jeannie Mack will perform all kinds of fun, bounce-around, sing-along songs geared for young children.   • Storytime on Zoom. Join Ms. Pam for stories songs, puppets, and crafts through zoom.  This interactive storytimes encourages language development, socialization and fun. For ages 2.5 to 5 years.   • Weekly Facebook Live Storytimes with Ms. Carly. Join Ms. Carly for a Facebook Live storytime on the Wayland Public Library’s facebook page. Babies through preschool age are invited to listen to stories, sing songs, and perform fun rhymes and movements.  Tuesdays, Sept. 29, Oct. 6, 13. 20 and 27 at 10:30 a.m.
  • FaceBook Live Family Storytime with Ms. Laura. Join Ms. Laura for a FB live storytime. The event will take place on the Wayland Library Facebook Page. Children ages 0 to 5 and their caregiver are invited to join to listen to stories, sing songs, and have fun! Mondays, Oct 5 and Oct 19 at 4 p.m.
  • Kids Yoga on FaceBook Live!  Sonia Gomez from Serfi Yoga will give a yoga class for children, toddlers to age 5. Her class will stream on the Wayland Facebook page on Thursday, October 8, at 1:30 p.m.

  • Spooktacular Storytime on FB Live. Join Ms. Carly for some semi-spooky stories and not-so-scary songs and rhymes! Go to the Wayland Public Library’s Facebook page to watch this live storytime. Best for ages 0-5 but all kids and their caregivers welcome! Wednesday, October 14 at 6:30 p.m.

FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

  • Outdoor Library Card Sign up for Kids and Chalk Drawing. Kids can sign up for their first library card between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. at this outdoor sign up session! Kids must be accompanied by a parent or guardian carrying picture ID with current address to register for a library card.  There will be chalk available to help us decorate our library sidewalk! We will also have our pop-up library set up for browsing, and kids can check out books off the cart with their new library cards. Please wear masks and maintain social distancing.   • New! Social Justice Storytime on ZOOM. Join Ms. Carly for a storytime that centers on social justice issues! This family friendly storytime will feature books, songs, and flannel boards that offer children and caregivers tools for meaningfully engaging with topics like anti-racism, LGBTQ+ rights, and the Black Lives Matter movement.   • Explore colors with Ms. Elise. Ms.Elise will lead children in an interactive exploration of colors. There will be stories, activities, and a scavenger hunt! For ages 4 and up. Please register from our eventkeeper calendar to get the zoom links. Wednesdays, October 7, 14, and 21 at 3 p.m.
  • Kindness Rocks in the Friends Garden. Wayland children painted these kindness rocks in one of our in-library programs last fall. The project was inspired by Linda Kranz’s book Only One You. Children are welcome to add new kindness rocks to this collection. They can paint a small rock at home and then place it beside the walkway to our curbside pickup.
  • Take & Make Craft Kits. We are offering weekly take & make craft kits for children ages 4 and up. The crafts will be simple but will inspire your children to use their imaginations while having fun. Kits can be picked up from our curbside table during scheduled pickup times.   • Take & Make Kits for Teens. We are offering weekly take & make craft kits for teens. Limit one per teen. Kits can be picked up from our curbside table during scheduled pickup times.  Please register online from our Eventkeeper calendar for a pickup on either Saturday, October 3 or Monday, October 5.
  • Teen Fiction Book Group. Teens are invited to an informal discussion of One of Us is Lying by Kelly McManus.  This book group will meet on the Wayland Library Discord server. Pumpkin Decorating Contest. Enter our 2nd annual Pumpkin Decorating Contest! Compete for best carved or best decorated pumpkin! We will have contests for kids ages 3-11, teens ages 12-18, and adults ages 19 and up. Submit photos of your pumpkin by October 26, then vote online.
