Blue-Green Algae in North Pond of Lake Cochituate

September 1, 2020

Visual observations provided by the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) indicate the presence of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) cells in the North Pond of Lake Cochituate. Cyanobacteria was observed by DCR staff at various locations in North Pond, including near Saxonville Beach and Wayland Town Beach.

This evidence suggests that the level of cyanobacteria in the water may exceed the MDPH guidelines for recreational waterbodies in Massachusetts. Accordingly, as recommended by MDPH a public health advisory is being issued by the Wayland Health Department. Signage will be posted at access points to the North Pond section of the lake to warn individuals against contact with the water (please see attached sign).

MDPH will conduct follow-up sampling at the waterbody when there is no longer visual evidence of a bloom.

The Health Department will post an update on our website once new information is available from the state;
