Join the Conversation about Changing Views of Masculinity to Commemorate White Ribbon Day

Wayland Police Chief Patrick Swanick, Roundtable Board Member Malcolm Astley, and Sudbury Police Chief Scott Nix display the White Ribbon Banner

To commemorate White Ribbon Day, please join the Sudbury-Wayland-Lincoln Domestic Violence Roundtable for a facilitated conversation about the controversial Gillette video entitled Is This the Best a Man Can Get?  This program will take place on Tuesday, March 12, 2019, at 3 PM in the Community Meeting Room of the Wayland Public Safety Building, 38 Cochituate Road, Wayland.

Thirty years ago Boston-based razor brand Gillette launched its The Best a Man Can Get tagline, and since then, it has been an aspirational statement reflecting standards that many men try to achieve. Recently Gillette released a video that urges men to act against sexual harassment, misogyny, and bullying using this same tagline.

Many men find themselves at a crossroads, caught between the past and a new era that defines masculinity differently. While it is clear changes are needed, where and when we can effect these changes is less obvious to many men. The changes also seem overwhelming and daunting

While many are applauding the move, critics say it assumes men need to be steered away from negative tendencies. A spokesperson for Gillette has said that debate was expected and that discussion is necessary. “If we do not discuss and talk about this subject, real change will not take place.”

The Roundtable cordially invites both men and women to join the conversation about society’s changing views of masculinity and how we can effect positive change in our communities. This program is open to the public and is part of the Roundtable’s 2019 White Ribbon programming.

The White Ribbon Campaign is a global movement of men and boys working to end male violence against women and girls. Active in over 60 countries, the movement seeks to promote healthy relationships, gender equity, and a compassionate vision of masculinity.
