ADULT PROGRAMS

  • Author Talk: Eric Jay Dolin Recounts Tales of America’s Most Notorious Pirates. Dolin’s book, Black Flags, Blue Waters, provides a wholly original account of the seafaring outlaws whose raids reflect the precarious nature of American colonial life.  Among them were the towering Blackbeard, ill-fated Captain Kidd, and sadistic Edward Low, who delighted in torturing his captives.  Afterwards, the author will take questions and sign books.  Wednesday, October 17 at 7 p.m.
  • Author Talk: The Lost Family with Jenna Blum. Bestselling author Blum will give read from and speak about her latest novel The Lost Family, an immersive, emotionally riveting family saga about the reverberations of World War II across generations.  She’ll be available afterwards for book signing.  Tuesday, October 23 at 7:30 p.m.
  • 3D Design Workshop: Keychain for New Users. Participants will be using Tinkercad.com to design and eventually print their own personalized keychain.  Tinkercad is a fun, free, and easy-to-use 3D design program.  All prints will be free.  To register on your own, you must be 10 or older.  Parents of younger kids are welcome to register and design with their children.  Thursday, October 18 at 5 p.m.
  • Craft a Book Pumpkin. We’ll be using Exacto knives and hot glue, so this activity is recommended for ages 12 and up.  Friday, October 19 at 1 p.m.
  • Explore the New Library of Things. Hitting the road?  Take along a Hotspot, one of our portable wi-fi devices.  Got some slides, videotapes, or LPs you’d like in digital form?  We have devices to convert them.  Not to mention Chromebooks, digital drawing tablet, external DVD drive, wireless phone charger, color-blindness glasses—even a couple of ukuleles.  We’re way beyond books now!

BABY AND PRE-SCHOOL PROGRAMS

  • Weekly Storytimes
    • Mother Goose Time (Infants-2.5 years) Tuesdays, Oct. 9, 16 and 23 at 10:30 a.m.
    • StoryVine (2.5 -5 years) Thursdays, Oct. 18 and 25 at 10:30 a.m.
  • Inclusive Playgroup: Stories, Songs, and Sign. This interactive, inclusive music and literacy group is for young children at all levels of communication and ability. Facilitated by Beverly Mobilia of Wayland Community Partnerships for Children and Families. For ages newborn to 3 years. Wednesdays, October 10 and 24, 11:00-11:45 a.m.
  • Sing-along with Jeannie Mack. Jeannie Mack will perform all kinds of fun, bounce-around, sing-along songs for young children. Plenty of opportunity for audience participation! For babies, toddlers, and preschoolers with caregiver. Thursday, October 11, 10:30-11:15 a.m.
  • Spooktacular Storytime. Join Ms. Carly at this Saturday storytime for some spooky stories and not-so-scary songs and rhymes! For babies to 5 years, with caregiver. Saturday, October 13, 11:00-11:30 a.m.
  • Music and Movement. Get your wiggles out! Songs, dances, and stretches for walkers to age 5. Wednesday, October 15, 10:30-11:00 a.m.
  • Brain Building Storytime. Storytime, parachute play, and brain building activity. Program led by Beverly Mobilia of Wayland Community Partnerships for Children and Families. For ages 2 to 5, with parent/caregiver. Wednesday, October 17, 11a.m.-12p.m.
  • Sensory Storytime. Children will sing songs, listen to stories, and participate in other engaging activities. For ages 2 and up, with parent/caregiver. Saturday, October 20, 10:30-11:00 a.m. Sensory Storytime is designed for children with autism spectrum disorders, sensory integration issues, other developmental disabilities, and their typically developing peers. If your child has difficulty sitting through our other storytimes, this program might be for you.
  • Zumba. Rhythm and dance program led by Hayley Chizinsky of H2K Happy Healthy Kids Fitness Studio. Tuesday, October 30, 10:30 a.m.

SCHOOL-AGE PROGRAMS.

  • Drop-in Craft: Apples and Pumpkins. It’s apple and pumpkin season! Join us for stories and crafts featuring apples and pumpkins. For ages 5 and up. Wednesday, October 10, 3:00-4:30 p.m.
  • What’s Our Story?: Shark Lady & Dragon Doctor. Join us for a reading of picture book biographies about two fearless women scientists: Eugenie Clark (Shark Lady) and Joan Procter (Dragon Doctor). There will be Reptile Activities too! Program led by librarian Elise Katz. For children in grades 1 to 3. Wednesday, October 17, 3:30-4:30 p.m.
  • Halloween Party. Drop in for a haunting afternoon of spooky crafts, magical treats, and monstrously fun activities. Costumes welcome but not required! For ages 5 and up. Wednesday, October 24, 3:00-4:30 p.m.
  • Girl Who Code Club.  NEW! The Wayland Public Library is offering a Girls Who Code club for girls in grades 3-5, which will meet on Monday afternoons, from 4:30 to 6:00, October 15 to December 17, excluding school holidays.  The mission of Girls Who Code is to help bridge the gender gap in the technology fields.  Wayland’s club will be led by parent and teacher volunteers, and the club will meet in the Raytheon Room of the library.
