Press Release on weekend flooding conditions and your help clearing street drains in your neighborhood

The following press release from Wayland Emergency Management, DPW and Wayland Police on Heavy Rain, Potential Flooding, Freezing Conditions was posted on the Wayland Police Department Facebook page

The National Weather Service has forecasted a multi-impact rain event Friday into Saturday. Heavy rain is expected Friday afternoon and evening and continuing into Saturday morning. Storm total rainfall amounts of 2 to 3 inches are expected. Heavy rain combined with rapid snowmelt will result in the possibility of some river and stream flooding along with the potential for isolated ice jam flooding on rivers. The heavy rainfall combined with snow-clogged storm drains may also result in significant street flooding and flooding of low-lying/poor drainage areas.

The heavy rain and associated flooding have the potential to impact the Friday evening commute. Strong 45-55 mph wind gusts late Friday into early Saturday could lead to a few downed limbs or small trees; isolated power outages are possible. As the heavier rain ends Saturday morning, temperatures will begin to drop, potentially resulting in flash-freezing. As the temperatures fall across the region, black ice may develop and any ice jams on rivers may freeze Saturday night and Sunday. This may cause hazardous travel conditions as well as extended river flooding. Do not attempt to drive through any deep water.

The Wayland DPW has been working diligently to clear catch basins to mitigate stormwater. If there is severe flooding, the DPW has several high capacity pumps on standby to help move excess water. They will be checking on the low lying areas that are known to flood.

Residents are urged to check on street drains in their neighborhoods and help keep them clear of ice snow and debris before, during, and after the storm. Residents should also make sure that their gutters and downspouts are clear to help move water away from their homes. Residents that are planning to go away over the weekend should have a friend or neighbor check on the homes.

If you lose power call Eversource at 800-592-2000. Do not call 911 or the Wayland Public Safety Dispatcher Center to report power outages.
Never touch or attempt to move a downed wire. Please report downed wires to the Police or Fire department; they will secure the area and make the proper notifications.

The storm is supposed to end with freezing rain and a drop in temperatures. The DPW is prepared to treat the roads. Drivers should use extreme caution as black ice in roads, driveways, parking lots and walkways is inevitable.
